2019 Goals

The time to prepare is upon us, post them goals!

Mine, as mentioned in the 2018 thread:

Results oriented:
Do well in a big stage race cat 2 field (either VoS again or Chico, or whatever else the team decides to target)
Podium in a P12 race (right now I feel like pack fodder in the P12 races, but still feel relevant in the 2/3's. I'd like to close that gap and get a result, even if it's at a smaller office park crit)

Personal:
Get more organized with my time management so I can take the time I need to train and race without feeling guilty, or pressured to do something else. When I feel guilty about training, I end up procrastinating on both errands AND riding, and then feel even worse about myself, and can get caught up in a spiral.

Fitness:
Get leaner, but with some additional muscle. At least to the point where I can see abs. Weight doesn't necessarily need to go down, I'm pretty happy with 145 lbs and would even take a muscular 150 lbs because crits.
Get my sprint back up to where it was. I've stopped practicing it as much, and I'm having a hard time breaking 1200w again.
Keep my overall volume up. 10+ hour weeks or bust, stretch for 15. That, plus following coach's plan, should result in a good engine.

Skills:
Work on sprinting from a small group. Not getting so nervous coming into the last lap in a break.
Work on sprinting from a bunch. I probably won't win, but I'm finding myself being timid again and favoring attacking early even when it doesn't make sense to do so.
Corner faster. I've improved this year, but still have a bit to work on.

As for my goals, I’m not sure yet. Main one is to just win something.

I dont think there's any amount of optimism that'll have me beating Justin Williams in a field sprint lol

1) 4W/kg (currently 3.57w/kg)
2) Get Lean (70ish kg, scale says 16% body fat)
- I'd like to get to 12% and whatever weight comes with that. Weight loss not the goal.
3) 1 hour 40k (standard road bike, aero bars, 62mm wheels)
- Current PR on this set up is 1:05. Five minutes is a lot, but I think it's doable.

1) Upgrade to cat 2
2) Do more MTB racing

in 2020 I imagine that I will focus more on track and continue with 2) above

2019 goals
1) Train on average 8 hrs/wk. This is an increase of ~ 1.5hrs per week average for me.
2) Race lots. For me this is 15-20 weeknight races + 5-8 weekend races in the year (+ maybe another 6 or so CX races)
3) Win a race. Stretch goal is to win the 50+ OBRA champ RR or crit.
4) Be a factor in the sprints in our weeknight series - at least a few top 5s in finishing springs, + several top 3 in the points laps. Podium at least 1 of these races.
5) 10" power up 200 watts (essentially to where I was 6-8 yrs ago)
6) 20' power up 20 watts from 2018, which is ~5W above my best ever

Some rough ideas

Process goals:
1) In the ~18 minute range up one of the local climbs.
2) 20 minute power in the 320 range
3) 5 minute power in the 4 minute range
4) Maintain a better cycle of intervals and proper work once the nice weather gets here
5) Maintain some lifting in my "diet" through race season to keep a better balanced body. (ie have less of a "cyclist" body and a more normal looking body type.. even if that will cost me some in the weight realm)

Race Goals:
1) Race less than previous years but with more focus
--- In those focused races I have some very specific results driven goals that I'll keep to myself. (https://blog.trello.com/science-back...are-your-goals)
2) Support some crucial teammates next year to get on the podium or victories.

Fun Goals:
1) Travel to at least one new bike event (not necessarily a race) somewhere I haven't been before
2) Race an xc ski race
3) Complete my Avy course and go on some backcountry tours
4) Compete in the open field at cx nats in Dec 2019 since it will be near my home town

Not sure yet, I’m still wavering on how invested I want to remain in bike racing.

But for now:
1. Train for, and compete in, the National Senior Games TTs. I’m not going to set any performance goals yet because the distances are short (5 & 10k) which does not play to my strengths. No idea what’s realistic but I think it will be interesting to train for and different for me. So we’ll see.
2. Race a local TT series, with both 20 and 40k TTs. I’ll try to win the series but in a low key way. This runs Oct through Mar.
3. Maybe race the Fiesta Island TT Series for 2019. It will depend on the dates, which will come out in Dec.
4. Improve MTB skills, which will probably entail attending another Trek Dirt Series clinic next summer.
5. I might race the State TT but only if the date gets published early and doesn’t get moved around.

I’ll probably organize my year similar to this year: TT focus Sept/Oct through June, followed by a summer of riding the heck out of my mountain bike.

Do well in the races I select, namely hit the numbers below, etc. I decided that setting 'winning' as a goal is silly, because its something that's not really in your control. All you can really do is get in the form required to win, that may be enough, it may not.

1) Consistently high CTL through the race season
2) Get my sprint back (1200+ peak power)
3) 300w over 20m
4) 4.5 w/kg

4) 4.5 w/kg

You can get it. I got it this month during the training. At the weight it came out to 4.35 w/kg at a comfy weight. Good golly is it more than enough to bash around the local hammer rides. Not sure how tall you are, but at 5' 9" and maybe a half inch, I find it tough to eat like I deserve to and to get below a minimum of 69kg. I could, but I like my wine and some treats.

So, I hit the 300w mark earlier than expected this month, but still anticipating a slow down in gains given available time input. Still have to push the bar for 2019. What is it about SMART goals? Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time bound?

So, here we go........

Results:

-podium a Cat 4/5 road race or oval track crit

-attend the local pro/1/2/3 hammer ride a few times

-get a sub 20-minute 10-mile TT (probably hardest goal, combo of power and aero)

-attend a USAC or other "official" time trial event, may require asking a favor of the wife to travel

Numbers:

-get to 320w for 20min and 290w+ for an hour

-overall of more than 4.5w/kg for the 20min number

-get a 5min MAX number of 20w more than this year, from 350w to 370w+.......at least a 5.5w/kg for 5min.......that'd be pretty devastating on the local group ride, not repeatable but just a max test

Fun stuff:

-KOM at least half of the "dirty dozen" hills in the Raleigh area.....currently I hold two to three depending on the hills you count and am top 10 in a few others

-32mph or faster 4km individual pursuit (on road)

-sub one-hour 25 mile TT

-"brick" a 1/2 IM bike ride and run workout

-get my 5k run time under 8min/mile

-attend a local duathlon and crush the bike leg

-be a total ass hole and take back a few local KOMs people got in pacelines by using the full time trial kit-up....skinsuit and helmet and all......let's see ya'll rotate 30mph for 5 miles

Good goals man. A 20 min 10 mile is tough. You do that and you'll be way faster than a 1hr 40k when you get there! Remember, power to speed ratio is not directly proportional.

That 5k time should be easy with your aerobic fitness from cycling. Just get out, build your mileage up safely(~10%/ week) and you'll get it in no time!

1- Find a team that I enjoy racing with and convince them to let me join.

2- Race >15 races.

3- 3 podiums (Cat4)

2019 goal: race.

Aim low and achieve.

Bike interest is low at the moment. Between doing some running and playing golf, I think I put in about 4 or 5 bike days last month. I'm sure I'll race due to peer pressure and whatnot, but will likely keep the drive to race radius around and hour or so.

Thanks @burnthesheep I got pretty close last season at 4.3 and 285w, which I could have done better since I was at 280 at 40m. My training was definitely unstructured last season so if I actually have a plan instead of prioritizing fun like I did last summer it should happen.

@hack Its hard to stay wired into this sport; its a ton of work with little reward. At some point it will call you and you'll be back! Kind of like when Rocky didn't want to fight or train but then he had a kid and Adrian told him to 'win' then he went HAM.

I'll be back ... just taking full advantage of the "offseason". Which apparently means 80+ degrees in November.

Yeah, the 20min 10mi is likely a pipe dream on the geometry of an aero roadie with clip-ons. Getting the 20min power up another 20w will get it closer, but, that would be pushing it with that geometry. Most of the British times at low wattage is due to the "wind" help of them riding inches from speeding cars on a freeway.

I need to just focus on getting the time down however far it will go. I think the 20min goal is maybe beyond 2019 even, like a goal before I turn 40 years old. Lol.

I'm going to try to find and convert a used rear disc from 10 speed to 11 speed. That'd be a few ticks on the clock. Not much else I can do other than add watts at this point, I've maxed the position out on the roadie with clip-ons.

I found a local road that's about 1 mile pan-flat to do some testing on. And I can ride to it from the house, bonus.
