Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

IKR. A friend and I were discussing this analogy the other day, it’s like kids playing on an abandoned rail line, only now there’s an invisible runaway train on the line that the kids are used to playing on, but they’re insistent on playing regardless like they’re accustomed to.

A lot of today’s “adults” are just not accustomed to any kind of constraints.

There is a weekly Thursday night training crit in an office park that is right behind my neighborhood and they have been going the past several weeks. I only know because some of the people I follow on Strava are doing it, from what I can tell from Strava, the attendance is about half usual which means 25 instead of 50 riders.

Yow. Looking at my IG feed, I see that my old client, Mr Rachel Ray, says that their house burned down.

Velo Vol's office park series remains a well-kept secret.

It's totally not happening this year for me, I have a hard enough time motivating myself to go out and meet new people even in normal times. There's a club that's got their normal rides going and are open to the public, but I'm hoping that they're following the same trend as you two, where it's really the core group only. Who knows, though, I've got no idea of the usual sizes of their rides.

Oh yeah. Phil Gaimon went to school with an epidemiologist that specializes in sports health and whatnot. After ranting about racing being resumed, Phil decided to step back and contact him for a video Q&A and has asked for questions to be submitted. Prolly too late to add to the questions, but the video should be out this week and should be pretty on-topic. I'll post it up when I see it.

I think Phil is just salty because he knows that taking the Everesting crown is looking less and less likely.

I'm still not exactly excited about the idea of riding with others, but then again I've been riding solo pretty much the whole time I've been riding so that's never been a big part of my life.

Ironically I remember this past winter thinking that this year's season I'd start doing regular group rides

When my group offered I decided I would go. Usually it’s less than 10 people, and I am the youngest. Everyone else is retired or works from home. If they asked me not to participate because of my job I would respect their wishes.

Datlas, followed your advice seems like it’s good to go. I’m gunna see if my friend will let me borrow his torque set one more day. I want to make sure it doesn’t loosen in tomorrow’s ride.

Manufacturer says 2nm for the cap, it took 6 nm before the steering was the way it was before the stem change, and the head set stopped being loose.

My favorite was right here in Philly. Guy sheers the top off a semi trailer going under a bridge, but the top stays attached while the driver proceeds to drive through the city dragging the top behind him. He made it a couple of miles before being pulled over by a cop who was responding to a report called in by an early morning jogger.

Ha - no. He's been pretty vocal about covid and even back-tracked on some of his earlier sentiment that was made before the severity was completely understood.

He also had the current Everesting record holder on for an interview recently and they were great together. Phil's brand of humor is polarizing but the Irish fellow was of similar snark and they got on splendidly.

You need more pressure to preload the stack than that flimsy cap wants to live at after the stem clamp is tightened. Make sense?

I took off with a side door of one of our minivans open the other day. I just waited til the coast was clear and slammed on the brakes. Problem solved.

I turned around to head home, stopping by parents for water and checked it again. This time looking at the bottom of the headset where the fork meets I could see movement when holding the front break and rocking it. I decided then not to ride it anymore.

I never felt any play while riding, should I be concerned? I plan on loosening the stem and then tightening the cap to 4 nm. My manual say 2nm, but that obviously wasn’t enough.
I had a similar problem with my Seven, couldn't keep the headset tight enough. Turned out the star nut (or whatever it's called) inside the steer tube was loose enough to creep up the steer tube. I took the cap off and the nut has a hex, I think it's 6mm, to lock it in place.
Kinda like the second one in this video.

When the senior softball league contacted me looking for volunteers to play this season I respectfully declined. I mean, guys in their 70s and 80s are about as high-risk as you can get.

I wish them well, so far so good as fas as I’ve heard.
