When I pedal, I can't shift into gears

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes. If you find you can't peddle someone will drope the hamer by you which you can then pick up and hit the crank with. This will, of course, loosen your gears and allow you to shift into gear 10. It is customary to then drope the hamer so the next poor sod can pick it up.
