I am now officially a hippy!
I've started taking stuff to the recycling center by bike...in the winter, so my mom doesn't take it in her car.
Plus there's a pretty girl who works there.
I feel like such a treehugger.

This activity does not involve:
-weed
-lounging on a couch
-hemp jewlery
-doritos
-patchouli oil
Therefore you may still not be a hippy.

Actually, you need to also get engaged on a monday and get married on the next Saturday on a beach in NorCal in torn blue jeans and exchange bracelets instead of rings. Two of the people who report to me and who are supposed to allow me to mentor them called me two Thursdays ago to announce to me that they were getting married on Saturday and had gotten engaged on Monday That's how they're wedding went. At least their families got to take part. Do keep in mind that they are 21 and 19 and neither have been married before.

Doritoes? No self respecting hippy eats those. It's only organic chips made locally by other hippies using fair trade practices.

Actually, Doritos were pretty big with my hippyish crowd in the early 70s, not long after they first came out. I don't know why.
BTW, we did not like the term "hippy" by that time. We called ourselves street people or freaks. The friends who lived on communes in the country were called "country cousins".

You're not a hippy until you've moved to Haight street (literally, you live on the street), poop in the doorway of someone's place of business, sell oregano to grade schoolers, and protest a war you know zero about. Oops forgot you also have to smell like a horse's patoot and smoke Marlboros while complaining about big corporations being evil.

Glad to hear you're officially a hippie.
We are stuck in a war which is of no possible benefit to our nation.
The only ones with the guts to do something about it the last time we were in this situation were...hippies.

However, as most on this forum probably know, the whole organic farm and food co-op scene is still thriving. Most of the merchants at my local farmer markets would fall into this category. My city has a street fair for "alternative" merchants every year, and the variety and numbers of particiants is impressive. There are a lot of them doing business on the Web too, including some who sell bikes and accessories.
What's this scene like where you live? If you know? Or care?

I am not aware of any rural communities/communes surviving longterm while lacking a work ethic, absent any sense of responsibilty, and without a capability to think or plan beyond living for the moment. I don't consider any person or "alternative merchant" who makes a living at his craft a hippy as you apparantly do.
