Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Books on building/converting a bike to single speed

Hello, I am not very mechanically inclined. I have wanted to try building my own bike for awhile now. I thought it would be a great way to learn how to work on bikes. I was wondering if there are any good books out there for building/converting road bikes to single speeds for someone that knows very little about bikes. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

Scrod, you might have been wrong about closing the other thread. I'm not sure this complex topic is getting the coverage it needs.

I doubt there's any book worth buying that is dedicated to the single speed conversion alone, but any mechanics manual should tell you everything you need to know to get the job done.

Never used it myself, but Park Tool is pretty much the authority on bike maintenance. I can't imagine their book is bad:

I love this forum and the people who post on it. I'd say one noob advice to the next is to search. Use the search option in the forum for questions you have and see if they have been covered before, its seriously a wealth of knowledge on here.

I have no idea if there are any 'books', but like others have said, and like i am saying now, browse this forum and read up!

Heck, if it wasnt for this forum i would be riding around on some bright green frame with yellow and pink wheeled clown looking tark bike. Its a great place, read up!

Oh, and this is kinda cool too!

Good luck!

In addition to the book, Park Tool's site is full of information about bike maintenance and will be good enough for you to tackle everything on your own.

Of course, you'll need a lot of tools to some of the tasks done.

Just use the internet to do research on FG. All the info you need is on Bike Forums and Sheldon Brown. Every time i have a question it's already been answered on here.

Sheldon Brown's site is more than enough info. I just built my first SS using a brand new road frame from the bottom up. It was a very rewarding and fun experience. PM me if you have any questions.
