Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I feel the same way, and yet I’m having trouble picturing an existence without the peace and quiet and privacy of a backyard. :sigh:

The F/F is pretty interesting, but it sure isn't gospel. My Wed Night Ride last week wrecked me for days and F/F was tellin' me to GO GO GO before I was ready. Prolly the different stress types - I'd been doing lots of sub/threshold-ish stuff, but the WNR was punchy as all get-out. It felt great, but the legs and diaphragm needed some R&R.

Doesn't the idea of beating yourself up based on math that you don't understand sound fun? You should totally get a PM next.
Tomorrow is looking like a good day, so long as I can get out of bed early enough I could get 40-50 in.

I guess I’m transitioning to being a fat slug?

Not really, there's a reason that I started college as a biology major but graduated with a BA in philosophy

My sister is here this weekend and I (again) asked her why she isn't on Strava.

She said it's for people who need a pat on the back.

Some people just don't get it.

The way the workday works here, for manual labor anyway, is you come to work at 8, and get started. Then the low man goes out and buys breakfast for the group. They get a half hour for breakfast and then go back to work. However, if there is no supervisor present, that half hour can get extended. Understandably. My supervisor quit, last week, over a disagreement with me, so now I am the supervisor. So I cannot leave for a bike ride until after breakfast, at 9 It is frequently too hot to begin a ride, after 10. It can be ok if you're already out there.

Are there KOMs in sailing? King of the Seas? Good time to set one.

There are many records for races, ocean crossings, etc., but competition for them is an arms race for billionaires and huge syndicates. When Moneybags and his or her crew of pros go out to set a record, they have the entire operation sitting at the start for days or weeks, ready to go at a few hours notice, and wait for their shore-based weather router to say "go." (S)he picks a conveyor belt of low pressure systems for them to get on. They want consistent winds in the 20-40 kt range, not a tropical storm which blows 70+, switches direction within a few miles or minutes, and then flies off to Labrador.

Ah, so they're slightly more sophisticated than the average Strava KOM hunter.

I saw an old friend while riding in the coastal mountains Saturday and he invited me to ride in the higher inland mountains tomorrow. I invited a faster friend and he invited another, even faster one. I must resist the urge to turn a nostalgia based friendly cruise into a bleeding-out-of-the-eyes-chase-at-red-line event.

Also, I should not blow up with a grueling climb today. Better get going before it gets any hotter.

I was hoping to get in decent ride tomorrow, but that may be in jeopardy.

My wife typically has Wed off, but they're on the cusp of an all-hands-on-deck situation. Just a few moments ago, my wife popped out of the office to complain about a peer that just sent an email indicating that he was going to be taking the next two days off because his internet was down. This means more work on my wife's plate.

"Hmmm. I wonder what the story is there..." I mused.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, you don't just **** off for two days at a time like this. Not if you expect to be with the company long-term."
"Do you think he's interviewing for another job?!"
"Of course not... I think that he already has one lined up and just hasn't given notice."

I hope I'm wrong, but something's not right.
