1995 Trek 720 Multitrack
Fairly new to the bike scene and looking to purchase my first bike in years. Came upon this Trek bike listed for sale and want to see if this is a reasonable price to pay for this bike. I'm trying to keep my budget under $200, so I know my choices are limited. The owner is asking $150 for this particular bike.
Trek 720 Multitrack Hybrid, says it's been checked by a shop.
Good deal?

That's a fair price for a clean 720 hybrid in good shape. Cromoly Trek hybrids are a little heavy by today's standards but a pretty comfy ride in return.

Well, worth the asking price if recently tuned. Don't snooze, hybrids are popular with everyone but this C & V crowd, particularly if it is a Trek.

I agree that 150 is fair, but be sure to examine the brakes before buying it- looks like it may have the early to mid 90s Shimano Altus brakes, which almost always break in a way that causes them to drag on the rim. Just be aware that if it is the Altus brakes, you'll almost definitely have to replace them at some point.

Thanks for the replies. About the brakes, how much would it cost to replace the brakes on this bike if they are indeed the Shimano Altus? What would you recommend as a replacement?

The tires look older. Don't see gum walls too often these days. If they haven't been replaced recently, budget for that as well.
All that said, those Treks were nice bikes.

Tektro Oryx about $14 per wheel, including decent pads. What happens is the Altus brakes have a plastic spring retainer that will crack eventually and replacements are unobtainium. Just put a pair on my Trek 700 hybrid.

I'm a big fan of the Trek Multitracks and own two 1995 730's. The 730 was my introduction to good bikes back in 1995 and I'll never get rid of it. I agree with offering $125 but the bike looks to be in excellent shape so I'd pay the $150.

Price is a little high I think but it does look clean. Check everything for proper operation.

Best price for replacement canti-brakes are the Nashbar branded ones that, when on a good sale, $20 for a complete bikes worth. I used a set last year to fix a Trek 720 and get it back on the road.
They work well and the install was really quick and easy.

Quick update: Not only did I get the bike, I got it for $100. Bike is in great condition and looks as good as it does in the pics. It's been tuned and has original components except for the Specialized seat. Grip shifters work smoothly. I believe it has the original gumwall tires, but either way they're in great condition...barely used with plenty of tread. I think I'll switch them out for some road slicks for the summer, maybe those Nashbar Streetwise tires.
Oddjob2, I believe you were right on the money about that plastic housing part. Before I rode over to pick up the bike, the seller informed me the plastic piece that covers the spring of one of the front cantilevers snapped that morning, which is why he lowered the price. I've only ridden once briefly since I purchased the bike, but it doesn't seem to affect performance. Either way, probably a good idea to replace them soon.
