If you were to listen to music ...

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OK, you're at a crossroads here. You can write about how one should never listen to music while on the road, or how you'd rather have silence regardless.

But let's imagine for a minute that you like listening to music while riding a bike.

What is the best song for the occasion?

Besides Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen) and Running on Empty (Jackson Browne), of course. I figure those are indisputable.

Born to Run is Springsteen.

Would add "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf.

I only listen to music when on the trainer. Don't do it on the road.

Das Fahradenlied by Friedhelm Deuselbach, of course. Art song is never out of place.

This subject comes up from time to time and I always go with the same reply that IMO is the perfect cadence song. 6 minutes of a consistent bass line by Sting and sharp, powerful drumming by Stewart Copeland.

Oops, yeah, meant Springsteen. Edited.

'Born to Be Wild' would definitely be up there. Just watched Easy Rider a couple of week ago in tribute to Peter Fonda.

If you like Springsteen (or even if you don't), you may want to see new film "Blinded By The Light."

I don't ride on the road, so no issue there. I use a bottle cage speaker and it's super handy because the path users hear me coming without having to use my bell. I typically put it on Pandora's rock classics and let it go. I try to stick to stuff that, as above, is upbeat and good to move the legs to. I have noted a bit of grumpy looks when I have it on the metal station, or play "F" the police....

Bicycle Race - queen

FWIW, I once went on a short group fundraiser ride and another rider had a portable Bluetooth speaker on his rack. I followed him the entire ride, jamming out to his music. It was great.

If you are trying to win a sprint or set a PR, go with The Real McKenzies "White Knuckle Ride." Yesterday as I was driving south on I95, the local classic rock station played Dio's "Rainbow In The Dark" and Danzig's "Mother" back to back. I cranked it and joined in. Next thing I know, I was doing 85mph! That song combo is hard to beat as well.

A classic rock tune that might have a good cadence for climbing is "Never Been Any Reason" from Head East.

I usually put it on the Springsteen station on Pandora. I also use bone conduction headphones so I can hear everything that's going on around me.

I don't generally listen to music when I ride but if I did, I'd just shuffle the few thousand songs stored in my phone.

My list of Pandora stations is decidedly ABC... anything but country. The station selection before I head out the door could come from my mood, could come from sheer laziness, where the phone just starts playing whatever station I had cued up last time. So those days, it could be anything from Aphex Twin to Post Malone to Khruangbin. If I wanna hammer, it's straight to my Excision station, for stuff like Datsik, Downlink, Getter, Skism, Space Laces, etc.

I think it's been my Nero station every day this week.

I stopped to talk to someone the other day and he asked me how I could hear the traffic with my buds in. I just gave him a wink, because that's the whole idea. I have a mix with everything from 60's rock to modern country. We have so many other senses at our disposal, why not use our ears for something enjoyable besides zooming traffic and honking horns?

Ear buds are worn on every solo ride. They sit in my helmet and I cant remember the last time I didnt listed to music while riding. I can hear cars and other cyclists even when on singletrack.

Never been a fan of speakers, just not for me. I dont want everyone to have to hear my music. But that's my issue.

Since the theme is cycling referenced music(born to run isn't really that, but is a top 3 song of his), I'll go more modern and reference the Flobots' Handlebars.
Sure it's more about how power is used and the dangers of greed than cycling, but its great!
Oddly, one of the most requested songs by my kids. They are fascinated by the song's story.
