Oh man that's impressive on a Varsity! Pulling some serious weight in the air...you remind me of a time my friends thought it would be a good idea for me to take my Varsity over a makeshift plywood/cinder block ramp they hastily constructed at the end of my buddy's street. The real dumb part is the end of his street had about a 45 degree downhill slope going into the woods.

Let's just say, Evel Knievel I was not. Although, the whole mess did end up a little like a minor reinterpretation of the ill-fated Caesar's Palace jump, luckily I didn't break anything...and of course the Varsity was completely fine...

Leave the wheelies to those with skills. It's not about age.

I've never heard the term "manualing" before this thread. A coasting wheelie? I wonder where the term "manual" in this context originated? It seems to not describe a coasting wheelie at all to someone not in the know.

Typical BF thread. You start on a lighthearted note and soon it all goes to heck.

I know what you were trying to do.

Like a few others mention above, I used to do wheelies on my old Schwinn Stingray, but can't do them on my roadie or single speed. FTW if you're 50+: Swerving skid across the finish line on your fixie that ends in a track stand. Really impresses the ladies and the youngsters.

Do as you wish, and enjoy your life fully. Do as others desire, and you wont. Listen to others, and thus continuously have to tell them to screw off. Thats their choice, for trying to make your choice, screw those guys.

Wheelies for Oldsters

Maybe if you're over 60 & can't get it up easily, that could cause you to end up flat on your back.

Of course, a *real* rider would have wheelied down the road until he caught up with his front tire, before putting it down...

I could do wheelies forever on my home-built Stingray and my Columbia balloon tired bomber (both in the 1960s) but could never master it on any multi-geared bike. Or maybe I have the 'caution gene' that forbids wheelies if using toe clips or clipless pedals.

It came from automotive and motorcycle drag racing. It was the inevitable result when to much horsepower and torque were applied too quickly. Especially when you had not tuned the tires and or gearing/weight distribution properly. With top fuel drag cars, it was magnified if air gathered under the body and held the car up or flipped it. Wheelie bars behind the cars or bikes were used to control it.

I never heard the term "manual" applied to drag racing wheelies.

If it's not about age why is it a hard lesson for 50+ riders?

If it's not about age then why mention the rider's age?

I get that you're trying to walk back your post but all you're doing at this point is stumbling.

Old people are suppose to know better. But everybody falls. The only sad part was he couldn't get up...again.

Tain't nuthin' to brag about!

For some serious braggadocio, read about the life of Dolemite.
Excerpt
"At the age of one he was drinkin' whiskey and gin.
At the age of two he was eating the bottles it came in.
Now Dolemite had an Uncle called "Sudden Death".
Killed a dozen bad men from the smell of his breath."
...
"I've swimmed across muddy rivers and ain't never got wet,
Mountains has fell on me and I ain't dead yet."

WARNING: Do NOT read or even seek more info about Dolemite if you are offended by ghetto expression or vulgar language.

Late arrival to the thread. Wheelies, I still pull them though mostly on my mountain bike and typically in a place when folks are watching. I confess, doing a catwalk at 62 is much more satisfying than as a teen. I never was an expert at it but certainly is fun to ride one out a little bit.

Manuals however, just cant do them. Arms are way too short. Maybe if one of the young mountain bikers coach me I can do new tricks.

You should really be giving this advice to 18 year olds, not that they'd listen.
