help, back tire too big

I got some marathon +'s for xmas (700x28) and the rear tire rubs against the brake. I thought about grinding out some of the brake as I don't care about them or the frame, but now am thinking about trying to exchange them first. They were bought from biketiresdirect.com

Question is, where do you find specs of how "tall" the tire is? Or do you just have to put them on? The bike is a mid 80's steel schwinn road bike and I had some cheap forte 28's that fit fine. I am looking for a tire comparable to the marathon + with reflective sidewalls and 700x28, probably from biketiresdirect.com. I'm going to email them, but any info on "short" commuter tires with reflective sidewalls would be great. Thanks.

Please explain where it is rubbing. Do you mean the tires rub against the caliper where it reaches around the tire, the top of the tire (the portion that touches the road) rubs against the brake hardware, or something else?

What bike do you ride?

I have these on my Felt F-80
Very tight fit on the front.

It's at the center/top, width is not a problem.

The bike is a mid 80's steel Schwinn, so there's probably more room than your Felt. I had some cheap Forte 28's on before and there was no problem.

How do you like those tires? That seems like a really good deal.

I also have the Forte 28's on another set of wheels.
The difference is the tread thickness.
The Michelin's are very nice. The first tires that I have had that require No Levers to install them.
Very Strong Side walls compared the Fortes.
I bought six of them.

if it's a 28c tyre, it'll be 28mm tall from the edge of the rim and 28mm wide, approximately.
it's a tube remember? width = approximate height, so a 25c tyre will be 25mm wide and 25mm tall approximately.

of course it also depends on your rim width and not all manufacturers size claims are accurate.

I see your point, but there has to be some difference as I had on 28's (Forte) previously (same rims) that had much more top clearance. I know the Forte's are notorious for being smaller than their marked size, but it shouldn't be that much of a difference. I think the marathon's have a much thicker tread (which is why I wanted them in the first place).

Yeah that's not an option.
