Great story.

As a sidebar: That tandem they are on, the spoke config is 20f 20r. If it's not an illusion of the picture... that seems pretty thin for a tandem.

Just an observation.

The rear is 24 spokes. That's only a little better.

Those look like Rolf Prima wheels by the way the spokes are indexed. Great wheels. I ride their Vigor RS (OEM) wheels which are 24 spoke front and 24 spoke rear, and I weigh 365 pounds. I have after a thousand miles only had to have a couple spokes tightened.

Rolf wheels are made in Eugene, Oregon.
