Electric Trike
I am trying to build an eclectic tricycle for my grandson with Down Syndrome
I was given a 48 watt motor and 48 watt controller. And I found a 36 watt battery
will this work?

Pretty sure the low voltage shut-off on the controller ill prevent any interaction of the battery and controller in every instance. Unless you knew the history of the battery, probably of limited value anyway. Look at Unit Pack Power for a reasonably priced 48V.

Leisure battery?
Thinking along the same lines but thinking of leisure lead acid as being a trike the weight and size are not such a problem. Should it work; two 24volt joined in series.

It should work, but it's not necessarily an easy solution since you need to coordinate the controller and motor. I haven't delved into this, but DW and C58 can be of assistance if they respond. The suggestion about lead-acid batteries is feasible since the extra weight shouldn't matter. You'll lose range and lifespan of the batteries, but it will allow you to try the system and see how your grandson responds; if positively, it'll be worth getting a Lithium battery. I don't expect everyone to agree with this.
