Schwinn GTX3 Crank arms won’t come off
I have a Schwinn Gtx 3 and am trying to replace the crank arms. I’ve removed the bolts and can’t separate the crank arms and gear assembly from the frame. Am I missing something? Thanks.

You have a bike with three-piece cranks. From your description it sounds like you need a crankarm extractor to remove the crank arms. Here's instrucitons:

I have already gotten the initial bolt off with a simple socket wrench. I guess I am not sure what this tool is supposed to do once the initial bolt is removed. Does it loosen up an interior piece so the crank can be removed?

It's a tapered press fit so it takes a puller to remove the crank arm, not something that just pops off.

Replacement part one piece crank arm and gears.
Stuck crank arm.

Those tapered press fits are very tight and require a specific screw press tool to pull them off.

You could try taking a safe, leisurely ride around the neighborhood or in an empty parking lot with the bolt still removed and see if the crank arms come loose. I have heard of people doing this who don't own a crank puller.

If you have a decent LBS take it to them with the bolts out.....ask how much they would charge to remove cranks.....from what I can see in the pix. .unless they run into some kind of problem (I can't imagine any) it would take them about 5 minutes.

@Spangen7628, make sure you tighten the bolts very well when you re-install. Torque wrench is preferred, but if none available get those bolts nice and tight, then ride for a while, then see if you can give them another 30° turn or so. Don't force it though. Make sure it's not bottoming out on the tapers.

https://www.amazon.com/Park-Tool-CCP...1&rps=1&sr=8-2 is the right tool, or buy something for <$10 if you're only using it once or twice. This has been the most common way for bicycle cranks to work since, I dunno, the 60s or earlier? It is a bike specific tool but hardly custom.
