Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I saw a group of Googleaires cruising through Los Gatos last weekend with most of them wearing the company jersey. They appeared to be all company employees. From Google, a nice loop is to go up Page Mill Road, along Skyline, then down Highway 9 to lunch in Los Gatos.

I understand that new employees can get these jerseys (or other Google stuff) for free when they join the company. I've never seen a non-employee wearing the jersey.

My friend wears a google jersey, but she doesn't work for them. It looks really good on her, and everyone always comments on it. It's cute.

She's probably one of those people that look good with nothing, or anything for that matter...

I think this jersey would look a lot nicer on a woman than on a man.

That would follow along the trend that Google has with company-wear. I have female friends who handle network peering at Google and they give out t-shirts to their peering partners. Apparently the shirts are cut pretty tight and they've taken to calling them "Booble shirts".

i heard this jersey secretly records where, when, and how fast you're riding and stores it all in a huge, secret database.

I'm doing this loop in reverse tomorrow morning. Hopefully, I'll spot some Googlians. And to those I saw riding in the middle of the day today in 100 degree temperatures - you are freaking insane. I went up Montebello yesterday, and the smog down in the valley along with the higher than normal humidity don't help the high temps.

Wow! It's been a long time since I have heard mention of that infamous April Fool's Day joke.

Yeah... those same pigeons will be pecking at the holes in your helmet. But that's okay because you'll be too preoccupied looking at the Google Ads that appear on the front of your jersey.

Bikes: highly modified specialized crossroads and GT hybrid (really a [formerly] 12-speed bmx cruiser, made before 'hybrid' took on its current meaning), as yet unmodified redline 925, couple of other projects

NASA has contemplated using bikes for personal transport on Mars. I remember seeing a Discovery Channel show where they had a CGI animation of a spacesuited astronaut riding a bike across the surface of either the moon or Mars. I wish I could find a video clip of it. The bike was white so they wouldn't be using one of mine. It'll have to be made of white carbon fibre. Admittedlty, white CF is really regular CF with a white outer layer usually made of fibreglass.
