What to do...
Okay well I just finished installing my Cateye Astrale 8, just to find out that the set button is broken. I had to return something else to Performance Bike earlier this week, so I have no receipt. Any ideas?

If you are a Performance member and used your membership, I wonder if there is a record of your transaction cross referenced to it? I know that at grocery stores, they can actually find a record of what you bought by bringing up your savings card number.

Also, does anyone know what the default tire setting is for the Astrale?

I would try taking it back to them - they should always give you back your receipt, so that's their fault. They have an excellent exchange/return policy, so they may very well just give you another unit. If you are a Team Performance member, they can look up your purchase history, so it's not a problem.
