My wife and I had a nice long talk and agreed on the exact number of bikes that would be acceptable to have around. I quickly realized... I could slip in just one more than that. I have no regrets.

I did not regret a second bike at all. I did regret my wife finding out I bought a second bike though.

I have 4 and I have already pre-justified 2-3 more. only thing preventing me is space at the moment and I am working on that.

last fall I was shopping for a preowned (2nd) bike. was having trouble finding the right 1 but came across something that would work right away for $50. shortly after, I found what I was really looking for, so my 2nd bike turned out to be my 3rd bike. but that's OK cuz last spring I sold 4. (technically, I'm still down by 1)

This is the case for a second. You can relax, pull one apart and wait months for parts with no regrets. 2 is 1 and 1 is none and 3 is even better.

I love your quote, I believe it will be my new mantra.
I love buying upgraded components to put on a brand new bike without having to answer questions why I think thats a good idea, (while she had no issues spending $500 on one pair of shoes when our closet looked like a shoe store warehouse).

I bought a hybrid to commute to work in less than ideal weather when I didn't want to ride the road bike. I hated it. To my dismay, riding in rain when you wear glasses makes it difficult to see when the glasses get very wet and it's worse if they fog up. Sold the hybrid, bought a Lynskey. Now I'm thinking about a single speed to ride to the train station and take on the train. Craigslist isn't turning up anything. Lots of cheap $300 online single speeds, but then I would have to "assemble" it.

My three bikes are so different there's no overlap, so no regrets.
The first, when I got back into cycling a couple of years ago was a Globe Carmel comfort hybrid. Heavy, cushy ride, massive solid frame, long wheelbase, very stable and confidence inspiring. It's now my errand bike and I ride it occasionally for casual cruises when my neck and back are hurting. Enjoyed a nice evening 12 mile, 12mph cruise on it Saturday after the rain cooled things down. Reminded me why I shouldn't sell it.
Mostly I ride my second bike a rigid steel fork/frame 1992 Univega Via Carisma, hybridized for comfort with a riser bar and wider, softer tires. Great for long 13-14 mph rides everywhere I'd care to go. I've ridden that bike about 1,500 miles this year so far. It's not as good an errand bike as the Globe Carmel, but it suits me better as an all around bike.
My third, which I've had only three weeks, is an '89 road racing bike. It's fast and fun when I'm feeling well, but it's literally a pain in the neck when I'm not at my best.

I regret having gotten rid of a few bikes, some tremendously; but I never regretted getting another one.

Lets see
Trek 540 touring my first bike
1996 Lemond Zurich 20,000 miles
1998 Lemond Tourlamet hrdly ridden too tall
Schwinn Highlander mt bike just above a Wally world bike
2006 Lemond Victoirre 18,000 miles on it
2003 Lemond Victoirre all ti bare frame
Just bought a 2016 Raleigh Tamland 1 gravel bike I love it but haven't ridden it much yet.
I like the one poster's idea of putting a couple of dollars a week in a jar that should get me some money into getting some money for the bare frame build.
Thanks
Zman

As long as the SO is still complaining about why you need a second bike or third bike, etc., you have to persevere and get another one. When you get to the point where she says "Why do you need all these bikes!, you are golden. That's because she is no longer counting and they are just a grouping. You are now free to add and remove from the group at will. She will still be annoyed by their presence, but unless you start infringing on her living space, she won't notice the individual bikes coming and going. They are just "all those bikes".

I regret my second. I had a Specialized Expedition Sport. I liked the upright and comfortable position. Then I got cocky and bought a Specialized Crosstrail because it looked cool. Never really rode it. I didn’t like the bent over body position. Now, I’ve sold both and bought a Specialized Roll Sport and live it.

Nope. I only regret that I have just enough parking space out there for six.
