Now this problem has happened before. It's always after going up a steep hill. Why is that? Do I need to take it into LBS or is it fixable? Basically I don't know how to explain it. When I pedal, I can't get into any gears. My bike cannot generate any power and I'm just spinning my wheels.

On a side note, my saddle bones aren't sore. I just rode 45 miles on my new ALR Emonda with my new padded bike shorts and I don't feel sore. I feel less sore after 45 miles now then I did after 25 miles. So I think that my saddle is good, maybe I just needed better shorts and a little getting used to the bike. But now I have the gear problem and it happened at the end of my workout.

Good news on the lack of soreness.

It's not very clear what you are describing regarding the spinning wheels gearing issue.

So, is the problem happening going up the hill or after the crest going down?

You are probably dropping the chain of the small front ring. It can be adjusted to perform and shift correctly. Bring it to a shop, or try and learn online.

Maybe the derailleur got damaged when you hit the little girl.

You've dropped your chain.

Put it back on and take the bicycle to an LBS to have them adjust it so that you don't drop your chain.

If the chain came off, you would see it flopping around. A bit more observation and information would help.

Could be your freehub, too. If your chain is properly in place everywhere, that's the only other possibility. Why it happens after climbing a steep hill, no clue. Just be happy it didn't let loose while climbing said hill.

True ... that's happened to me before, but I had put a lot of kilometers onto those freehubs in all kinds of weather.

Look guys. When I peddle, I'm just spinning my wheels. I can't generate any power even when I shift the gears. It's as Simple as that.

To sum up what we have said above ... either you have dropped your chain ... or your freehub is kaput.


Or ...

Is your bicycle still doing that now? Or did you shift enough times to get back into a gear that does "generate power"?

If chain dropped, I assume he'd stop and put it back on and I would assume he'd recognize that. Is it front or rear that's not shifting or both? Something makes me think user error...no offense

So you climbed the hill, and then all of a sudden you could no longer change gears and still can't. So you coasted home or walked or something?

Is that right?

Go look at your bicycle. What does your chain look like? Is it taut or is it just hanging there? Take a photo and post it here.

I walked the last half mile. Once I climbed a hill, I couldn't spin at any gear I wanted. It was like every Gear was set at 0. When I turned the wheels backwards it was making a strange, rough sound.

Did you look at the chain? Go look at the chain now. Is it sitting on the gears with the teeth of the gears peeking through the holes of the chain, or is it lodged between two gears, or off the gears all together?

Could be that the chain is riding on top of the small chainring. Not shifting properly between rings.

The chain usually drops off the front chainring because the limit screws are misadjusted, allowing the front derailleur to push the chain too far. The LOW limit screw controls shifting to the smallest chainring. The HIGH limit screw control shifting to the biggest chainring.

Look at the bike.
Hold the bike with 1 hand, and turn the pedal with the other.
Does the chain appear to be properly on the rear cogs and front chain ring ??
Or has it come off the front chainring ?
How did it get fixed last time ?
You don't need experience or technical terms to explain this, and it would be helpful to know.

Apparently LBS that charges a couple hundred every time a bike falls over also cant set a limit screw.

Should get yourself a set of eyes. Might help you troubleshoot these issues by yourself in the future.
