Cyclists who expel snot while riding
I came back from a bike ride today on a trail and there was a road cyclist one person ahead of me. All of a sudden I see him reach for his nose and start blowing forcefully, trying to eject as much snot as possible into the air. Meanwhile there was this woman behind him (who was in front of me) who may have caught the brunt of it. I slowed down because there was a wind and didn't want to breathe any of that in. What is up with that? It's rude and gross. Why not at least stop and do it to the side?

I don't stop, because I'm on the way to work usually and I don't really give a damn what the guy behind me thinks. I do use a tissue, however.

Vasomotor rhinitis. The tendency for the nose to run as one warms up with exercise. It can happen anytime, anywhere. When mine acts up, it drips like a leaky faucet--- he should use tissue, though.

I do it occasionally, but not when there are other cyclists or pedestrians around to catch a face full of mucus. I spit too, but not on other people.

I do it occasionally, but not usually when other riders or people are around. If I'm riding with a group, I'll ride offline and/or slow to the back.

I was stopped at an intersection a couple months ago. A girl comes up from behind and cuts directly in front of me like I didn't exist. The light turns green and she is holding me up. I'm about to pass and she horks a giant loogie, which sprays all over my face. Then she turns off at the next street and is gone. I really wish people would pay better attention to what is going on around them.

This has always been my experience of foo. Any time. Any context.
I'm sure there must be a formula. Probably several theories and competing formulae.
No time ... going for a ride.
(however ... this seems to be general cycling ... but foo still expands ... always)

I always send snot rockets and spit to my right side where other riders should not be. Over the years I've nailed a couple of people who made the mistake of passing on the right.

Once in a while I may even let out a little toot while riding. But I'm getting older now and shouldn't be as trusting of farts as I used to.

The way you describe the incident has me wondering if he had inhaled an insect of some sorts. I have orally ingested my share of bugs and yes even once had inhaled one. It does happen.....

I blow snot all the time. I can't help it. Breathing becomes near impossible if I don't. Stopping every single time would be impractical. I always look behind me and only do it when distance is far to the person behind me. But once I did mess up when at 2 in the morning after a 120km ride I blew to the left of me only to find a woman trying to overtake me. I don't think I hit her but it was very close and I may have slightly. I was too exhausted to say anything as she continued past me (I had riden 120km without food or water).

If you don't want to get snotted on, or spit on, or farted on ... back off!

I snot & have been snotted on, not sure what else to die with the stuff when I'm riding.
to snot or not to snot, that is the question. whether 'tis nobler in mind to suffer the shots & bogies of outrageous fortune or take a tissue a tissue against a sea of mucous

The old saying is, "If you sling poop at a bunch of people wearing scrubs, Respiratory Therapists will duck, and nurses will just stand there; if you sling loogies, the nurses will duck and the RTs will stand there." (I guess the docs are somewhere looking up the labs!) Looking back at this thread, cyclists must be born RTs!

Firing snot rockets while riding is a fine art, and I was showing my son how to do it the other day.
But, I make sure there's no one in the line of fire.

Yikes! Quite a disgusting thread here!
I can't imagine someone in front of me doing that without a tissue. Nasty. I would pull up to them and say something.

IMHO anyone who's worked hard enough to accumulate a fair amount of snot has earned the right to perform a well intentioned snot rocket. It is, as others have suggested, a fine art and one whose nuances should not be worked out amongst others. However, if you have ever ridden in echelon form, rest assured you have ridden into someone else's mucous mist.
It happens. Smells better than car exhaust.

I dip and spit when I ride... I try and look before I spit to make sure no one is coming up behind/beside me...but I am old and do not see as good as I used to...
