Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

8 tracks were on the way out when I was a yute. I had A few. From memory; Eagles - On the Border, Doors - Strange Days, Dire Straits- Communique and one more that escapes me. The bonus with 8 tracks was you could scrape your window with them in a pinch.

As far as the age thing, I was probably 1 or 2 years ahead of you when you were in Sharpsville. We could have been classmates. Of course I went to A neighboring school.

I don't know how to change it, nor do I know what the actual should be. But 2800 versus 2300 is a pretty big margin of error.

I think that you have to do it on the desktop. Somewhere next to your elevation, there should be a little question mark. Clicking on it will bring up a dialog box with an option to correct the profile.

And yes - that's a pretty big difference, but I've seen worse. Some barometric altimeters are worse than others.

I only see that on distance.

Ah. iPhone app. So they probably get their elevation from their maps, hence no correction? Then again, if the previous ride was also recorded on the app...

Now that I can't answer. But the first part, yes, should be correct. Can't "correct" the elevation to the data it already has.

Comparing with his May ride, today's was a few miles longer with a couple short jaunts down some other roads. Dang Vol, giving us only part of the story.

Right time right place ya know

I'm sure it's been done before, but I don't know if I've ever gotten one. There were sometimes battles back in the monthly renewal days.

App. I'm low tech.

NBD, but the size of the discrepancy struck me. To the extent I pay attention on my commute, the elevation seems reasonable similar from day to day.

Oh of course!

The frame is a 1977 Schwinn Super Le Tour 12.2, one of the ones that was built by Panasonic in Japan. This one happens to have the $50 full chrome finish

I bought it about 3 years ago from the late owner's brother up in the upper peninsula of Michigan, and ran it with the original running gear sans wheels for a while.

This year I stripped the yellowing and chipping lacquer from the frame and discovered a basically flawless chrome finish.

Similarly to all of my vintage bikes, I can't leave well enough alone and there's barely anything original. I think at this point the only original component is the seat post binder bolt

Currently it's running the following:

Shimano 600 "Arabesque" 52/39 crankset
Campagnolo Mirage 8s levers
Campagnolo Mirage 8s long cage derailleur
Shimano 600 "Arabesque" FD
7 speed 12(?)-28 Shimano cassette
H Plus Son Archetype rims & Formula hubs (I think ~1600g)

I think at the moment it's somewhere around 21-22lbs.

This is going to be getting the 5800 stuff once I buy a chain and cassette. It's going to be so good

Busy day. Long ride, then some calls about the minivan. Apparently the frame is bent and it’s more than the service dept can manage. Will be getting estimate from body shop but we are askeered it will be a total loss as the car is 13 with 160k miles on it. Sad! But at least Heidi is ok so I am not too bothered.

I had to plan my route so that I could get back home on time for a co-picnic with another family. The other family just canceled because of the threat of rain. My first thought was, "damn, I could have stayed out for another 20 miles!" but the reality is that, if not for the picnic plans, I wouldn't have gotten such a long leash in the first place. I guess I can't be too upset.

Very nice! Finding undamaged chrome under the aged lacquer must have felt like Christmas!

As you can probably tell from my postings, I like old frames with more modern components. No reason to be stuck with single pivot brakes, downtube shifters, or narrow gearing just because that's how it was. I kept the Ritchey with its original 7410 Dura Ace till this fall, when I realized that I didn't ride it because the 12-25 gearing was not as comfortable to ride as my bikes with wider gearing. So I upgraded the brifters, cassette, and rear derailleur to 7800 but kept that beautiful 7410 crank. So, I took it from being 25 years behind the times to just 15 years!
