Trek 2000 taking shape, model year????
Good Morning, since it seems to be a slow news day and most of us are in the icy grip of winter I thought I would post my Trek project. As some of you may recall I bought a neglected 2000 frame a few months ago and I finally got around to working on it. I have it down to the car wash a few weeks ago for a good cleaning but the paint is worse than I thought.
I seen to have neglected to take pics of this as a frame only or lost them in the electronic hell of my hard drive, so here is a seller pic.
I took a visit to Vintage Trek but the serial number, which appears to be 888886 shows it to be a '92 but the white with red graphics shows it to be an '88 or even an '85? Any ideas? I'll try and post a serial pic, I should have taken one before building.
I am trying to build it with stuff on hand and so far I have, Miche BB and Chorus; red cranks, brake calipers and levers, RD and seatpost. Simplex shifters, my somewhat trademark Kalloy hybrid stem, Nitto B115 bars, a Sante FD (came w/ frame) and pair of Wolber TX Profile rims laced to 105 SC hubs.
The bars were already wrapped from a Bianchi I took them off of before I sold it and I really don't want to unwrap and waste that tape.

I'm guessing that's a 88-89. the "2000" model Wasn't offered in the early 90's. If the first digit of the SN was "3" that would be a SN in the range of 89 model year.
They were famous for messing up SN's in the early 80's. I had a 420 that was clearly painted, decal and equipped as a 420 but the SN said it was a 400.
Regardless its looking like a nice build.

Thanks, it will be my first Trek and my first alloy bike since......'91 which was a Cannonball
AH OK I got out a flashlight and my readers and it does look like a 3 so that make it 388886, the fourth digit could be 3 rather than an 8 too.

I had a very similar 1990 Trek 2000. Came as a frankenbike, and was too small as well. So I sorted it out and moved it to a new home.
Decals were not maroon as they look in this pic. Bad camera day for me, as cable housing and bottle cage were both bright red.

Looking good! Just landed an 86 TREK 400T Elance....pretty much all there, but plenty of corrosion, working on cleaning up, just TOO DANG big for me (64cm)....the story of my bikes, TOO BIG or TOO SMALL....though it may fit my collage age son...though I don't trust him with it at collage....he is on his 3rd bike....(fortunately, all cheepo's) Yours looks VERY clean, like a fun project. Fighting rust is not fun, MOST of the paint is good, but at EVERY attachement point...rust and bubbled paint. :-(

That crank works really well on that frame. Also, nice poster there! I just moves appartments and my roommate asked if I had any ideas for some decoration in our living room (aside from our bikes cluttering up the place!) and I was thibking of getting some large prints of campy exploded view drawings.

So far as I know/was told this is a Chorus 172.5 crankset, and I am guessing it is the 2nd gen with looks more like a CdA crank rather than having the super lowprofile spider with the rim around the extractor thread area. It was powdercoated but never used before I bought it. I thought it might go on the Cornelo but went all Triomphe on that. The rings, although coming with the arms, look mismatched like they are for 10+spd and the arms for 8 or 9. I intend to run 7 or 8spd shimano cassette, Chrous RD, and a KMC 8spd chain so I do not expect any issues. Oh what spacer do I need for a 7spd cassette on a 8 spd freehub?
WHen I realized I didn't have ringbolts for this, I quickly installed a set of blue Omni Racer bolts I got from WhatWolf on one of my Bianchis but the hidden bolt caused problems so I need to play musical crank bolts one day.
As you can see the rings and spider don't really match up
I had to put some bosses on here and found some I had around. If I have troubel with them I'll likely go to a barend setup and try just a very long bolt or threaded rod to hold some cable stops in place.
If this Drillium Duded RD looks familiar I took it off my K2 and made that 600 indexing.
Nothing wrong with a little bicycle art on the walls. The CampI poster is great but my new Clement poster may be a bit nicer.

Just an update, with the arrival of the Jagwire cables from HongKong and lacking a more exciting social life I did a little wrenching on the Trek lastnight. Yes I know the current color scheme doesn't really work but I'll change that.
I took a short spin and mechanically everything checks out. The ride seemed OK but I wasn't climbing or sprinting so time will tell on that. I think the wheels are crap, much like most everything associated that Basso I pawned, so they will be off to the shop for truing or will be replaced.
I may look around for a red saddle but I think anything that doesn't look like the size 5N shoe last may be a fruitless quest. Again I hate the idea of taking off a nicely applied and new Celeste cork tape so a bar swap may be in order but that will result in black hoods, and possibly the dreaded quill adaptor.
I may swapp out these more desirable Simplex shifters for the Sachs on the Mondiale when I refit that for sale.
Yes Old Milwaukee 16oz can may have been a better beverage choice but, a few old Millers and Coors are all I had on hand and I wasn't running out for a case of beer (yes you have to buy it by the case in PA) just for a few photos.

I was tinkering with this yesterday and removed the Simplex shifters intending to put them on the Bianchi I want to sell, so I put the ugly Sachs shifters off the Bianchi and put them on here. I found a different saddle for Univega so that saddle replaced the Celeste saddle for now. I was taping the bars and after several near misses on the drive side the cheap tape tore half way through the left so I had to get new tape. Hopefully I will have revised pics tomorrow, unless the rain moves in early.
I might do some wheel/tire swapping and put set of silver Mavic Reflex wheels I just got on here and put these tan tires on the Bianchi too.

I didn't see this thread the first time around, but as far as determining the year - this is the tubing sticker on an '88. Alcoa - you have Easton tubing.
Unfortunately I don't have a serial number - the frame is sold.
"ALUMINUM" on your frame is also slightly different, although the rest of the decals seem the same. Compare:

1st very nice bike, 2nd I'm starting to think you have an alcohol problem. Most people put "water" bottles on their bikes.

OK as mentiond last night I made some changes, someone was nice enough to get me some redtape so I wrapped the bars this morning. I might get a red bottle if I get down to the Amishish bike shop about 30 milse south of here. He sells thos nice Zefal cages I like. I also need to look for some red or silver SPDs
