Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which rides are you looking forward to this year?

Do you have any lined up at this point? Is anyone in here planning to do any traveling with their bike? When does the outdoor riding season start for you (if it ends)?

I'm riding year round so far, but obviously in terms of group rides things won't heat up until the weather improves. I'm looking forward to the Five Boro Bike Tour, the Bike MS ride, Escape From New York, and a few others on the NY/NJ calendar.

Speaking of which...someone ought to make a calendar of all the major bike rides in a given area, particularly for large metro areas. Between the various charities and whatnot, there's probably several each month during the spring, summer, and fall -- at least in NYC, and probably in most other places as well. I wonder if there's anything like that out there.

I'm doing a century this summer. completion of that is a huge milestone for me. beyond that I have no official 'rides' planned even though I'd like to.

I'm also riding year round, but I've got a June vacation planned in Yellowstone, where I'll get in a couple days of cycling.

The Levi Leipheimer Gran Fondo this October in Santa Rosa. I may do the 65-miler with a friend while the other does the 103-miler.

I've been riding in the drizzle. Outdoor cycling is a year round thing up here, except for the two days it snows. But I haven't been traveling with my bike lately, and I'm looking forward to that starting again. A lot of the most interesting mountain roads start to melt in late March.

dirt road touring is starting to sound extremely appealing. portland has tons of logging roads near by in the foothills around mt. hood and in the coast range. built up the perfect bike for it this winter. also thinking about giving track racing a go once things warm up. doing a time trial at the end of february to kick start spring. january as typical in portland was dreary and cold. spring is around the corner however.

Sea Otter Gran Fondo is a definite.

Mountain Charlie Challenge and the Great Western Bicycle Rally are others that I am contemplating.

I thought you were dead, Tycho! They told me you drank too much beer at a party, didn't want to excuse yourself because you're too much a gentleman, and your bladder exploded. A few people harbor suspicions your assistant, Kepler, poisoned you.

TOSRV in OH, 2nd weekend in May
Horsey 100 in KY, May 26
Assenmacher 100 in Aug., Mi
MS Ride in Tenn. Oct 5/6
A couple of other long (100 mile) rides in there somewhere too.

I did Seattle to Portland a couple of years ago. If you ride look up Gabe Castillo and the Grupetto's. They are really good riders in the 16-18 range. You need to register now, if it not too late. 10k riders and it sells out quick.

Whoa! I never heard of the Mountain Charlie Challenge, but I just looked at it - that is a super route! I may need to come to California for that.

I have about 5 stage races on my calendar and a three day weekend in Grand Junction with my girlfriends, and a week in Tucson.

reach the beach in portland, OR.

Done it with good friends for 5 years now. its tradition.

Was gonna do the STP, but I really dont want to spend that much on the registration, hotel, food...etc. Rather just get some friends and ride on a nice weekend.

Was thinking about the Triple Bypass but it filled/closed on Jan. 7
Signed up for the Copper Triangle in Aug.
My buddy from FL may come out in June and we'll do one of the Denver centuries.
We've been fortunate enough to have good weather this month so I've already been out riding. Feb/Mar may not be so good - we'll see if we get any snow.

Ronde van Vlaanderen Cyclo in March, Milano-Sanremo Amatoriale in June. I'm skipping L'Etape du Tour this year to do a motorcycle trip instead.

Planning on biking along the Crooked River Highway, from North of Prineville to South of Bend, Oregon in late summer or early fall.

Which rides are you looking forward to this year? -- Not sure yet ... I don't know where we'll be after the end of February.

Do you have any lined up at this point? -- Nope. But I'm sure we will have soon, once we get more settled.

Is anyone in here planning to do any traveling with their bike? -- We've been travelling with our bicycles for the past 7.5 months ... around the world. We just arrived back where we started today. However, I'm sure we will do some more travelling with our bicycles ... hub-and-spoke tours and that sort of thing, at least.
When does the outdoor riding season start for you (if it ends)? -- January 1. We were in British Columbia then, and Rowan and I did a ride with my father. Chilly but very nice. Two weeks later we were in the heat of Western Australia. Now we're in Victoria, just north of Melbourne.

The outdoor riding season doesn't stop for me. On super icy days I switch to fatter tires or studs. But the real long distance riding season will probably kick in for me mid February when the temps pick up a little predawn.

some solo centuries in southern california in the desert and in the mountains. probably one or two incorporating both but march/april and november are the best times for that usually.

aiming for riding what is allegedly the most beautiful highway in arizona-hwy 67 on the kaibab plateau from jacob lake to the north rim of the grand canyon and back either in early june or just after labor day. either way, it will be on a weekday and without the extra summer traffic. can't head that way without sneaking in a little ride in zion np too.

Going to do the Hilly Hundred in Bancroft Ontario, that will be the only organized ride. A few other ones that stick out are just annual rides with family and friends with the two biggies being Cottage Ride when we ride to the cottage, 215-220k depending on route and then the Go East Ride, get on bikes have parents or wives follow in support, leave house at 5:00 ride till can't ride no more. Last year was 380k.
