if you're going to use the antique term jockey wheel then you'll have to also say idler wheel
as there is one of each on a rear derailleur. or you could just say derailleur pulleys
pop quiz: which one is top and bottom?

The top wheel is the jockey, 'cause the bottom is idle.

Not to begrudge any of you bottoms out there...

Of course red are faster. Their goal is to win.
Blue are slower so that, with a lower speed, participation feels like winning.

According to the engineer Akilesh Kannan:

“Usually violet has the highest speed and red the least. That's because of relative refractive indices.”

So there you have it. It just looks faster.

Here’s mine:

I have a 34T sprocket to reduce unwanted speed

In fact, research shows translucid pulleys are faster, because light pass through them instead of refracting which takes power.

They used to be red but need a good clean after the latest tour. Which reminds me, I should post some pictures tomorrow.

Partially correct. The red pulley wheels refract, which requires energy.

Believe it or not, the greatest undiscovered secret in cycling history is the Lexan frameset. It allows so much heat energy to pass through that the heat transfer that would otherwise slow the rider is reduced by nearly 42%, documented in hot air tests conducted by Hamsterdam University. Other riders literally describe a kinetic force working against their own strength as one of these carves through a peloton.

Also, with the unmatched performance upgrades of a Lexan frameset, you can afford yourself gold plated components, which, while not inherently faster, blind your opponents into yielding their position in the pack.

The UCI hasn't ruled on these yet, but they should be joining the ranks of funny bikes and bottom bracket bearings from washing machines quite soon.

-Kurt

P.S.: How red?

So, maybe I SHOULDN'T replace this with a Campy Nuovo Record on my recent Gitane acquisition?

I think that science should be brought to bear on the nature of colored pulley wheels. Everything else is just so much speculation. I found a video of a scientist who might be able to shed some light on this most important topic:

Missed this thread! Of course they are faster! Helpful accessories are red frame of De Rosa source, red on the pedals, red cable caps and of course a splash of red in the spokes to help find the valve stem in all the blackness.
