broke my madone
so today as I was riding I felt a clunk come from my drive train. I stopped to check it out, after a bit of poking around I found that the rear drop out moves in and out of the chainstay about 1/4 inch. so I would say it is no longer bonded together. anyone know what the repair procedure is? does it have to go back to the factory or can a trek dealer fix it? and there isnt a warenty on this frame, I am the second owner. anyone seethat as a problem?

Lifetime warranty on the frame! Second owner... shucks, bring it to your dealer and they'll send it in for assessment.

I'd go right to trek.com and find out if the warranty is for the original owner.
Do you know the original owner? Have them bring it in for repair.

I think it's about $125 to send the frame in to trek to get it rebonded. Even if you're not the original owner.

You'll get no warranty deal since you're the second owner.
Trek can rebond the dropout into the frame for ~$125.

Has coddling tendencies.
If it's strong enough for cars, trucks and farm tractors, it's probably fine for a bike.

Does not sound like a problem that an LBS can fix. Factory it is.
It may be worth contacting Calfee to see how much they would charge to fix it. Their price may be better than Trek's.
Good luck.

Yeah, but then I would always have that in the back of my mind. and on a 40 mph decent I dont really want that thought. hell ,even if that is how trek fixes it, as long as they dont tell me I'm good with it!

JB Weld is crap. The only conceivable excuse for using it is, "It's all I could find, so I gave it a try."
What you want is called Hysol. 9695 is killer good as is 9396. Look around on the web for where to get it. You'll only need 1 tube (contains both parts), but it'll be expensive. It doesn't matter. It's cheaper than sending it off to Wisconsin, and quite possibly the same or better than what they would do.
Make sure the parts you are bonding are very clean and do the final wipe down with acetone. This stuff cures faster/better if it's heated up, so put a drop light on it over night to keep it warm.

well, thats part of the problem too I cant clean it or even get any epoxy in there because half of it is still in the seat stay. If I had too, I could do the repair myself but I would rather see it done correctly even if I have to pay.

I'd say send it in.
JB Weld is just epoxy. Don't go slathering glue on there, or you may make it where Trek can't fix it either.

Happened to me on my Trek 5000. Took it to the LBS I bought it from and they dismantled the bike, shipped it off for repair and I had a nice new shiny dropout in about 2.5 weeks. I am not sure how this all works out with the second owner business, but best of luck!

Simple repair...
1. Loosen and remove all components
2. Remove damaged carbon fiber frame
3. Insert new titanium frame
4. Attach and tighten all components
