Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not necessary. How often do people ride their bike on a completely unfamiliar course anyway?

To be fair to the other side, the problem doesn't exist IF it's a fair weather ride in the sunshine AND you like Garmin more than simple computers. The times I really needed GPS navigation, lost in a rainstorm and depending on a phone, it was completely useless. Paper cue sheets, which I had, were also useless. I'd have loved to have had OP's idea or something along those lines.

I truly do feel for the navigation-ally challenged people that can't get by with a glance at a map before a ride. However the most useful tech I think that is very nearly to the point of marketing to the masses is heads up display tech on your glasses. Albeit it looks like you'll have to buy their glasses. But the results with some are looking good. There is a wealth of other information besides course info they can display while keeping your eyes where they might notice something more important, IE. a cyclist putting on the brakes in front of you.

My solution is in the off chance I need navigation, stop and pull phone out of jersey pocket and check your route. Nothing additional needed

Exactly.

And for those times when there is no cellphone reception, then pull out the old astrolabe. All you need is a clean line of sight.
