General tubing thickness

I realize there is a lot to this but am hoping for some input. I am working on a cruiser type frame, looptail bend etc. I believe 5/8" will be size of the stays and cro-mo. What internal diameter is strong yet somewhat lightweight and will bend? Also, what is a typical down tube thickness, or is there one? 26" wheeler cruiser type frame.

.028" or .035" are the common sizes for stays. Typical cruisers have fairly gentle bends, so either would work. .035" is harder to bend, but less likely to have ugly bending artifacts.

You might want to look at some of the bicycle specific tubes for the downtube. I think you'll find that it's cheaper than straight gauge 4130. But the answer to your question really depends on your joining process.

@unterhausen Many thanks, I will also look into the downtube as I will be using a headtube, bb and seat tube from a supply house to make it easier.
