Final(?) NYC Century 2019

(Thought I'd give this its own thread instead of it being buried in the 5 Boro's discussion.)

I was worried about Dorian skirting up the east coast earlier this week, but the NYC forecast, at this moment, looks perfect. Should be a fun ride! Taking my gravel bike as I think it will be more comfortable for a ride like this.
This will be my fourth NYC Century over the past nine years, I hope it's not the last (perhaps some other org will take it over).

Are folks riding the full century?

Have fun, ride safe....see you at Nathan's or maybe the Kissena Velodrome.

I'll be there, starting in Prospect Park for the full 100 (I think). What I always hate is getting to Central Park, having whatever they offer, and then having to do the last 15 miles starting with Harlem Hill. We usually don't follow the ride from that point as it takes you into traffic on a Sunday afternoon that wasn't there at 6am when the ride started. Greenway and the Manhattan Bridge, the way I usually go.

I finished the ride and did the full 100. It wasn't nearly as busy as in prior years, the format was slightly different in that they allowed the different distances to start at the same time and didn't line up the Brooklyn riders. Rest stops were fewer and the food was less varied, not that what they had in the past was great either. Usually there are samples being given of the various food and drinks being sold but not so much. The finish in CP had no food at all that I could find. In a way it was just them saying OK, we're done.

There was one incident that happened next to ____ Links Golf Course in the Bronx. (I won't say his name.) I was with someone that I met and stuck with on the ride, and a bunch of guys jerks come screaming past, and they boxed me and her in as they passed us. I almost hit a cover that was sunk into the pavement but managed to swerve to avoid it. I was about to turn to her and basically call them a bunch of jerks when the lead jerk hits the next sunken cover, flats both tires and goes down, taking his pack with him. I'm just behind them at this point and saw myself going down too except that I slammed on my brakes, unclipped and landed on my feet with the bike upright along the curb so nobody would hit me from the back either. It happened so fast. At 64, a crash like that would probably break some bones if I go down. When my new friend and I got back on the bikes she said she was thinking the same thing. The lead guy that went down cracked his new looking Giant carbon frame too.

It just pissed me off because they came by with the "get out of my way" attitude.

Ugh. Shtuff like that is why I tend to avoid big organized events. Too many folks that don't know what they're doing - or worse, folks that think they're all that - in a small space. Glad you and your friend are cool.
