C+1 - Help ID Another Colnago Find

I picked up this beautiful Colnago frameset (repainted purple at Bertrand Cycles) with 3T handlebar and stem along with Superbe Pro parts. Too good a deal to let pass by. Just need to assemble and throw some wheels on it. It is slightly bigger - 1cm extra on top tube - than the one I found at the end of summer. And looks to be an older model.

I always like to know more about my purchase a and I hope our C&V members can help me pinpoint era and possibly model. I found it interesting to see all the braise on points for racks. Also the seat stay cap is concave as opposed to the convex on my earlier find. Cannot find a serial number so far and I am going to have to gently encourage the stem out to check head tube.

Very nice looking paint job by Bertrand that seems to be of good quality. I will post a pic when it it is all built up.

Colnago (1987?) frame I purchased in September.

Full shot of new find.

I'd suggest that your Colnago frame is probably a 'Super' model from 1982, or there-a-bouts. I would also suggest that the rack braze-ons were added when the frame was re-painted. Being a Super from 1982 and with racks fitted I would also guess that the previous owner may have been attempting a lightweight tourer or commuter and he may have also fitted mudguards which may have been just possible as there would be just enough room between the rear wheel and the seat tube. I would zip tie the guards in place.

Pre 1983 by a year or two. See time line Velo-Retro: Colnago Super Timeline (velo-retro.com)
Fluted stays introduced about 1980

This suggestion makes sense. Bertrand cycles, who purportedly did the paint, was a steel frame builder with a very good reputation out of Quebec Canada.

Sad story ... I had a Bertrand back in the 90s and it was a very nice bicycle. Electic pink and green with Santé groupset. Lent it to a friend, about 12 years ago; who had it stolen. With carbon bikes becoming the norm at the time, it was difficult to explain the value to my friend, so I declared it a write-off.

Thanks for that tip. It is the most likely explanation.

I would also guess ‘81-‘82
the second set of bottle mounts may also have been added.

as time went on the bikes shrank in top tube length for a given size.

Just another thought - keep the rack mounts and add 2 light weight racks and turn it into a 'randonneur'. It would be interesting to add a Campagnolo Nuovo/Super Record groupset but change the rear derailleur over for a Campagnolo Rally rear derailleur and look for a wider range 6 speed block to suit the derailleur. While you're on the hunt for a Campy Rally derailleur, look for a Cinelli Randonneur handlebar too.

The Campagnolo Rally rear derailleurs came in 2 versions but the first version had the 'style'.

I found it on Kijiji (like Craigslists) in a town nearby in which a family member lives. They picked it up for me. A little lucky.

Not fluted like a master.
The chain stays have crimping which I believe is an indicator of era.

Yes. The seat tube length of the two models is almost identical whereas the purple is almost a cm longer.

So interestingly ... the older purple model does have crimped. chain stays; the newer 87ish blue and white bike DOES NOT have crimped chain stays. Does this mean newer bike is not a Super?

Threw some Dura Ace 10 speed on the frame for kicks today and I am really liking the resto-mod look for this bike. And yes I know some will believe it to be sacrilege to do this ... but in the end it is the ride that counts.

later 80's is beyond my knowledge as a bike shop worker. Going to have to reference that.

All done. Stuck with the Restomod look for now using DA 10 speed. Looking pretty fly with the purple bar tape.

Looks great; my only suggestion would be to replace the saddle with something low-profile, and maybe purple.
