Quick Survey for Engineering Students - Please Help!
Hey guys! Could you guys take a sec and answer this survey on bike locks? It should take around 30 seconds. It's for a high school engineering class I'm taking.

The survey doesn't allow for sufficient conditions. In my case, one unlocked bike was stolen from my parents' unlocked garage when I was a kid. One bike was stolen when it was locked and chained to a solid stand. One bike was stolen from a locked locker in a locked basement, but the bike itself wasn't locked.

Filled it out, but the survey was pointless and not relevant to engineering or design. Students need to review their surveys with instructors or mentors before posting these requests. Or at the very least ask that one student in your class who's always sarcastic and doesn't like anything you like. He/she will at least be honest about whether the survey is useful. Your buddies and families will lie and say "Yeah, looks great!"
Almost invariably the surveys are poorly designed and will not elicit useful data or information. Same thing with the hundreds of survey requests I've seen on various hobbyist sites. I've seen maybe two reasonably well designed surveys out of hundreds of requests.

You missed a key element, namely where one lives and rides, and the conditions where one would lock it up.
When I lived in NYC I needed a massive lock to keep the bike safe. U-locks didn't exist yet, so it was 2' o marine anchor chain and a big padlock. These were so heavy and annoying that a few friends and I bought 20 sets all keyed alike, and spread them around in key locations so we could find a lock where we needed it.
Nowadays, I live in the burbs and can generally get by with a relatively light duty cable.
So, while I answered that I was satisfied in the level of security, it was deceiving, because my needs were low.
As an engineering student, the most valuable lesson you'll learn is that you have to ask good questions in order to get meaningful answers.

That's true! Right now we are trying to find out whether a market exists for this product that we are thinking of making, and this survey helps us do that.
