HELP needed in collar bone protection

I have a 9 year old son thats into BMX racing . Three weeks ago he broke his collar bone chasing after the #1 plate at a NBL national ( sitting in the #2 spot for 2008 ) . He is recoving very quickly and is wanting to get back racing again , but I want more protection for him . He has been wearing a hard shell chest protector that he was wearing when he had the crash . So can I get some advice on what would be the best jacket to buy with collar bone protection ?

Thanks mhp800 !!!!!

A motocross roost protector? I doubt you'll find too many BMX people who wear any sort of collarbone protection - most of us don't even wear kneepads, and we worry far more about those than our collarbones.

My son races 8X and wears a Thor roost protector that has saved him a lot of grief, it is pretty scarred up, but it offers little protection to his collar bone. It seems to be one of the more common BMX race injuries but I have yet to see anyone with any sort of armour that would prevent it as the armour would have to absorb the impact to the top of your shoulder. I can not imagine anything short of football pads that would do that. I wear a Mace Flak Jacket when I race as I broke some ribs in a crash but it would only protect my shoulder if I went down on my side.

Don't rush it, i broke my collerbone once. No need for protection though, it'll be stronger than normal once it's fixed

Collarbones generally break when your hand hits the ground and force is transmitted up your arm. They generally don't break when your shoulder hits.

I will be sure to pass the observation that collarbones don't generally break when your shoulder hits the ground on to the two local racers I saw suffer this injury during this past year while they still had their hands on the bars.

Google "common causes broken clavicle" and you will get something like this on practically every site that comes up:
"accidents such as falls against the shoulder or on an outstretched hand are a common cause of fractures of the clavicle"
No doubt you can break your collar bone in either manner but I have yet to witness a BMX racer break his collar bone without hitting his/her shoulder.
