Vintage Shamal rim welding?
So I just discovered a small crack in the brake surface area of my vintage Shamal rim ( it went through the rim, it's visible on the inner side of the rim as well). Given the price and rarity of such a wheel would you say it's possible to repair by welding? Thank you

Is this just the first thin spot of a worn braking surface? If so, then the rim is likely beyond salvage. I would carefully measure braking surface thickness at several points around the rim before going any further

That's a classic failure point from brake track wear and is really the death knell of that rim. Rarity or not it's a goner.

If you think about what will happen when the rim blows out without warning and the sharp, spinning shards of aluminum which will result you will likely agree with the comments above. Some have posted the bloody results on this forum.
If you want to measure the brake track thickness you can get an Iwansson dental caliper cheaply from EBay sellers. But your rim is a goner for certain.

Why bother. Buy some new modern wheels and save the old stuff for when you are ready to put the bike up in your museum.

It would be simpler to just see if the brake track is flat. It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the track is concave.
