Top tube mounts

I was checking out the new RLT Steel and the top tube mounts have me wondering what's out there to go on them?

Anything that takes a water-bottle mount, TBH.

I saw last year's at an LBS a few weeks ago, pretty sharp looking bike IRL. The tapered OS headtube does look a bit hinky relative to the rest of the 853 tubeset.

I just stumbled across a video from Performance Bikes talking about the Fuji Jari and the guy specifically referred to them as "bento box mounts, borrowed from triathlon." So there you go, you were spot on.

Tri people are so funny....they spec an ultra expensive build with internal cable routing, bling wheels probably, put pursuit and aerobars on it....then ride it with 40mm of spacers under the stem and a zip bag for lord know what .

Tri people are weird.

I like how things that are unacceptable on the road are fine and even encouraged on gravel. I have aero bars, a top tube bag and a gigantic saddle bag (three tubes, multi tool, and a first aid kid and some other bits) on my gravel bike; I'd never be caught dead with that crap on my road bike.

No mirrors on anything though.

I think both designs, the top tube mount and bento box which uses them are fantastic. Two alloy bolts beat velcro straps any day. I wish my Niner RDO had top tube mounts like the steel version pictured in the first post.

Tri specific or not, X-Lab gear is some of the finest made. I have X-Lab Mezzo saddle bags on all my bikes.

The fact is that 99% of the technology on bikes today came out of the triathlon community and those who design for it.

Most likely they take the same bolts as your bottle cages. Try it, then go to a hardware store or bike shop. I think these mounts are a great idea. I dislike the velcro bentos. I'm thinking of adding some to a steel frame with nutserts (or whatever they are called.)

The same bolts as bottle cages. M5 x 10mm should work fine.

I bought this bag and really wanted to like it. However, a rough 100 miles at Land Run ruined the bag.

The problem is that it's impossible to get the bolts tightened securely enough to keep them from backing out while riding rough roads. The bolt is tightened using a 2mm allen wrench inserted into the side of the bolt.

During Land Run, the bolts backed out about half way and then wedged themselves between the slide mechanism and bag itself which made it impossible to remove the bag without tearing it.

Good news is that I did get a refund from Apidura (great customer service)
