Shimano Alfine
where does this fit in the quality hierarchy of Shimano Chainsets?
Has the Afine range (of Chainsets), been discontinued?

Alfine is the premium level (approximately equal to XT/Ultegra). All the hub requires from a crank is that it aligns with the sprocket (which can be either -3, 0, or +3mm). Fine adjustment is typically easier with a square taper, which can be shimmed, swapped for a longer or shorter spindle, or the use of chainring spacers.
Shimano, very helpfully, publishes the chainlines of their cranks... So that can help.

Alfine 8 is offering the disc brake hubshell around the 8 speed nexus internals..
there is only the Alfine model for the 11 speed internals.
