Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Me three. I put some in my bike last December thinking I would switch them out once Spring rolled around, but now I think I'll leave them on.

PS Nice bike, Adrianinkc.

I was pretty enthusiastic about 4-seasons and have gone through plenty of them over the last couple years. I'm to the point now where I'm convinced there have to be better options. They wear too quickly to be valid for a winter training/commuting tire and the puncture protection seems to be well below their claims.

The Schwalbe Ultremo DD looks to be a tire along the same philosophy and many of my teammates and race buddies have said it's a great tire. What interests me most is their claim that it is ideal for glass shards which is what almost all my flats are from on the 4-Season. I'm not sure if it's really all that true of a claim though.

I'm actually leaning towards using Gator Hardshells for all my training/commuting just for the durability and relatively low cost. I know they won't grip well and they'll roll like tanks but that's okay for training.

Hey nhluhr

How many flats do you get with these tires? ANd how many did you get with your last favorite tires in comparison?

I've been using Conti tires so long I don't even know but I recall flats being a LOT more common in my pre-conti days when I used things like Specialized Turbo, Vredestein Fortezza, etc. I have a combination of 4seasons, 4000S, and Gatorskin on my various bikes now. I guess over the 'winter months' (October through Feb) I had about 3000mi and maybe 4-5 flats, one of which was not a puncture.

Any outright noticeable difference between the 4seasons, 4000s, and Gatorskins you could give to the rest of us? I've got some 4000s to replace Gatorskins, but am curious about the 4seasons.

Well, for one, the 4000s definitely "feel" faster and I don't really seem to get many more flats, but I tend not to use 4000's through the winter here.

I feel that the 4 seasons are way more compliant. They seem very smooth and flexable compaired to the gatorskins. I think they hold the road better and seem like they roll faster/eaiser.

This thread is timely. I just got a set of GP 4 seasons in 700c x 28 for my commuter.

Me too, rode them today for the first time. Not entirely thrilled to see my '28's are clearly 25mm wide at 100psi!

Try the Michelin PRO4 Endurance. Best fast glass-shard tire I ever ran. The 4 Seasons now uses the same rubber as the 4000S, which is wonderful stuff but it collects glass shards like crazy IME. I think the PRO4 might even be a little faster than the 4 Seasons, about the same as the 4000S. At least I can't tell the difference. Advantage to 4 Seasons is the 28c which is unavailable in the PRO4. But I run them on my tandem at a 350 lb. all up weight, so 25c should work for a single.

+1 for the Conti tyres. Gatorskins here, 700X25 on the CAAD 10. Try Ribble for some prices that are great right now.
