Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sad, obviously, but I think there's some relief being felt, too. He'd been bedridden and incoherent for days. I know that the long, mostly sleepless overnights were taking a toll on my wife, too, and she was growing resentful towards her mother and brother because of the division of duties, etc.

I suppose we'll be here at least a few more days to help my mother in law navigate this new stage.

I take it off and clean it when I change my chain, so every 3500ish miles/twice a year.

Regarding cables and housing, I've had the inside of housing rust and would generally change the housing every spring on whatever bike(s) that I rode through the winter.

You do not sound like an idiot and (almost) nobody likes a grungy bike, but what’s the advantage of perfectly clean that outweighs the many downsides of buying, messing around with, and disposing of, organic solvents or toxic detergents any more than one has to? And gasoline is just a really bad idea on many levels.

I'm just now reading a book about our connections with other people. It turns out that those who have good and strong connections or friendships to others are happier and have fewer health issues and actually live longer. The other side of the coin is that caregivers of friends or family can begin to experience greater levels of stress which in turn causes increased heart rate, in increase in numerous stress hormones that over time affects the caregivers health.

I’ve done the flossing method, I couldn’t reach the back of it, didn’t know the extremes people would go through to keep a cassette clean. I clean my chain with the brush and the degreaser, the lube it and after about 50 miles its really bad. Not using the best product. I was gifted white lightening or christmas, figured I would use the until it’s all gone.

But yes, wireless shifting would be snazzy. But not SRAM. I am not worthy of SRAM.

Meh it's coming down and will come down more when shimano goes wireless. I have 1750 in the new bike for components. Contadore was around 1600 for 11 speed whifi, with rim brakes.

If one is corroded so is the other, replace them both. And get new bar tape too. Inspect your bars for corrosion while they are exposed.

gas wont hurt your cassette just makes a messy job messier.
The problem with cleaning it on the bike is that the degreaser can get into the bearings on a non sealed hub and degrade the grease.
I try to not let it get that bad , clean it more frequently.
