Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I know you're being intentionally absurdist, but I see it the opposite. If you had 20 million in the bank and didn't have to spend that much time working, how could you let yourself get unhealthy?

If I had that kind of time and money, I'd train my butt off all the time because I like doing that more than eating my way through all 3 fridges in my mansion's expansive kitchen.

They are probably a bit lighter than my current ones, so they will most definitely make me go faster. Rotational weight too, so 3x faster.

Then get two pairs. Speed is exponential, so, you'll be 9x faster.

Wait... I thought we were in agreement that heavier is better for all things bike related?

They did a century race on PIR, our local 2-mile road circuit in Portland. Unfortunately it was limited to CAT3 and up, so I couldn't race it. They only held it the one year so I'd guess it didn't go over so well.

Good thinking. I'll get some small ones and some XXL ones to wear on top of the others.

Forgot about that...Hmm...See above. That would make me faster, but also heavier (= more faster) at the same time, right? Win win WIN.

The idea of riding a bicycle 40 laps around IMS to get 100 miles just doesn't seem entertaining.

Yes, I'd have a personal chef and would probably only do exactly what I loved to do at that point, and if it was a reflection of my life now, I'd probably just have consistently healthier higher end food and drink, and the free time to ride multiple high end bicycles in exotic locations around the world.

You know how I know you don't have that rich-mindset homie? Cuz you still thinkin' bout opening up your own fridge doors.. you wouldn't even have to cook / ever open up a referigator again, guarantee it. (clearly continuing my absurdity)

BTW I'm building / help designing some custom donation board plaque for some multi billionaire hedge fund grad at a school.

Ironically the plaque text is some hobb nobb about finding contentment and 'treating others nicely in the world'. A far cry I believe from what corporate finance oozes on a regular basis.

Cheers to what we do and then what we tell the rest of the world to do ole chap.

I keep seeing custom ones on wtfkits and it appears people are just using special markers to make their own. I'm tempted to get an old pair of giro empire's and get creative.

You can't, or at least not yet. If they do go on sale I'm sure they will be stupidly priced anyway, so no nice shoes for me.

I noticed in the ToC commentary they kept talking about the gold lettering on Wiggins' bike, that it's because he won a gold olympic medal.

Who cares about gold lettering on his bike? Am I missing something here?

What else are they going to talk about for 5 hours or however long the stage lasts?

$775 limited edition Rapha / Giro team pair up coming soon!

They're cool, don't get me wrong. I can imagine that they will be emotionally priced very shortly.

I like my R088's for how wide they are. Anyone know of other incredibly wide or available in 'wide' 3 hole cleat shoes?

Re: the learning to drink alcohol in New Orleans at age 18, I estimate you were only about 5 years behind the locals. At least that is how it was growing up there in the 50s and 60s. Everybody had a fake ID at 13 or 14. Everybody had a buddy who was a a year or two older and therefore was driving at 15. Everyone worked after school and on weekends from 14 on and had plenty of spending money. No one I knew had a curfew. It was wild. Hanging around the Jim's (Famous for Fried Chicken) or Luke's Bar and Grill all night eating, drinking beer, playing the pin ball machines, the real kind with 25 numbered holes, not the sissy kind with just bumpers and flippers. And, of course, they paid off winners with money, not free games. Ah, dem were de days.

When I say "pinball machine", this is what I'm talking about. Most folks I know have never even seen one of these, much less lost their weeks wages playing one.

It was kind of like a cross between Bingo and slot machines. You had five balls and had to get them in holes that lined up in a row, column or diagonal on the screen. Not a row on the floor of the machine, but a row up on the screen. If you screwed up after a couple of balls, you could buy more by dropping more nickels into the machine, but you never knew how many it would take. It was all random. Also you could buy the chance to see other screens that might be more favorable to where you had already landed your balls. You could also pay to increase the payout odds for winning. But every upgrade took an unknown amount of money to get what you were after. It was nothing to see a guy have $50 deposited in the machine for just one game. Sometimes a game took an hour or more of fooling around with the extra balls, screens and odds. And of course the onlookers were pumped up into a frenzy as the odds got higher and higher and the money put into the machine kept going up. Fights would break out among the bystanders who would argue about what was the best way for the player to optimize his chances. And the more money the player had riding on the game, the harder it was to quit. There was a lot of body English used to move the balls into the target holes. But you could have all that money at stake and hit the machine too hard so that it "tilted". That is, it locked up and ended the game if you tripped the mercury switch inside. It was kind of like a Trump rally.
