You can post pics to an album on your profile and someone will post them to this thread. You can also post comments you may have to other threads and engage in a conversation to get to 10 posts.

juvela, thank you for posting the pics from my album. Back in the day I used to ride through Alta Loma on my way to Mt. Baldy for a monthly mountain climb. It was mostly citrus groves back then. I moved to So Carolina from Devore Heights six years ago.

question for the Allegro experts -

have seen a good number of the Special model from the period between the late nineteen fifties and the early nineteen seventies

in all cases recalled if fitted with a headset from Verot-Perrin they would exhibit a chainset from the manufacturer as well, whether a 57, 63 or 93

so slightly surprised to see a Record chainset here

wonder if it may have been a replacement

I guess it would have to be a replacement since the 144 BCD Record crankset wasn't introduced until the mid sixties.

Correct you are. I'll blame it on my eyes since I'd rather not blame my head!

Is that crankset a 52-48? 14-26 freewheel? My Baldy? The days when men were men and spinning was for making fabrics..

My best friend's dad bought an Allegro (from the Bicycle Exchange of Cambridge, Ma) 5 years later. As I recall, he had a choice of an all Campy bike or Stronglight, etc. He had the Campy and we ogled it. My friend's dad was a huge influence on my bikes and riding but I never owned a European gem. Well, I now own a Carlton Raleigh Competition but it is no gem. Flunked QC and should never have been sold. I raced the flagship Fuji pro and worked at the Fuji shop a mile down the street from the Bicycle Exchange.

Are you positive it's 1960? It would be great if you knew for sure. I have #167974 and I've only been able to narrow it to 59-61. Hard data is non-existent.

In one of the other Allegro threads there is a link to an informal spreadsheet where info has been entered by Allegro owners. I figured out the age of my two using this and the date stamps on original components.

Great example of a smoke effect paint job AND fade paint

I’ve always wondered what made an Allegro special different from an Allegro. The elaborateness of the paint and chrome seems to be the distinguishing factor.

returning to chainset -

if for example the Record bottom bracket assembly were marked "CON SFERE DA 3/16" " this would date chainset to nineteen and sixty-three

...or if bottom bracket assembly were to be one form Verot-Perrin this would be a tell of non-originality of chainset...

but the imaged bike shows a 151 BCD, earlier, still could have been an upgrade but still in the early 1960’s

Bike is unchanged from special ordered and is equipped as bought and delivered new to me from John’s Bicycle in Pasadena, California in the summer of 1960 (between my sophomore and junior year of high school Class of 1962). Only the toe clips and straps are non-original. The chain set is 49-46 and 13-26 freewheel.

thanks very much for this clarification

one borderline minor surprise is presence of Gran Sport front gear mech

launch of the Record model front gear mech is nominally 1959 although it probably did not really get into the distribution stream until 1960

may be the case that Neuchatel was "using up what is in the bin"

"factory" configuration at this time would have been Stronglight model 57 chainset and Lyotard Model 23 Rene Berthet pedals

"custom order" explains all

thank you again

Rear derailer is also Gran Sport. And the Unicanitor saddle was an option I picked.

the Record model rear mech did not launch until December of 1963

so there was a period of time where the top-of-the-line Campag gear ensemble would have been Gran Sport rear with Record front from 1959 to 1963

---

images provided to not give a "face view" of the cycle's Weinmann centrepull brake calipers

owned a Special from this time which was kitted with the seldom seen luxury finish calipers, would expect their presence on your example as well

these were reportedly current 1957-1962

Those pads are a 9 on a Rockwell hardness scale and are not going anywhere. lol. Waiting on USPS for replacement pads to arrive. My assistant that helped me clean up the bike put those on and I elected not to correct as new replacement ones were on order.
