I always looked at fatbikes as some sort of circus wagon, neither fish nor fowl and not a "real" bike. But I was at the local park after a trail run. A couple of guys were getting ready to head out on their fatbikes and I struck up a conversation. One guy let me take a quick loop around the parking lot. I went up onto the snow and it floated like magic.

Wow.

The bike put a smile on my face instantly. I now get the appeal. If it snowed here more regular (like in the old days), it might be my next N+1.

We don't get enough snow here anymore either to make it worth getting a bike just to ride in it, but I see someone occasionally on the MUP with one. I'm hard of hearing as all get out, but I can hear those tires for quite some time. They do look like they could be fun though.

I have absolutely no doubt that fatbikes are very capable in condtions that don't suit any other kind of bike. However, I've reached a point in my life where I'm uninterested in the weather conditions in which they excel.

I had thought fatties were just once more toy for people who already had too many. Back in 2014, my S-I-L convinced me to give one a spine. I was hooked in five minutes. It was SO much fun being 7 years old again!

I also resisted the fattie. Did my winter riding for years on 700x35 studded.
Fat bike is my only MTB.

They're really fun, just like being a little kid again. I got my first fat bike last month.

They are extremely popular here on Long Island, where some of the trails have a lot of sandy spots. On occasion we get snow, the last storm a few weeks ago pretty much only the fat bikes were out having fun. Then there’s a whole club just rides the endless beaches. But a lot of folks have simply replaced their standard mt bikes and just ride a fat bike beceause the trail surface is perfect for the wide tire,

Snow, sand, soft gravel and most of all when there is no trail, a fattie will take you anywhere your legs are strong enough to take you. Don't use it just for snow, you will be delighted

That doesn't happen all of the time. Depends on snow conditions and moisture contact. There are times you ride on snow and the tires just sink right in and you come to a complete stop.

And if those are the snow conditions, then you go out and snowshoe the trail for a few hours instead of riding and come back tomorrow.

You really do need to work on looking for the negative in ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING.
