My friend Amy found this late 80's Raleigh at a thrift store as shown here:

After a bunch of parts and labor...(and pink, she LOVES pink).

Happy to say she's become a bicycle commuter because of it.

Then I found this late 80's Specialized Hard Rock frame at the local recycler. It had a few misc parts on it that I stripped off for other builds.

Another female friend of mine liked it, and had me build it into a drop bar school commuter for her. (It's still red, bad photo). We later wrapped the bars, but I don't have a good shot of that.

1977 Gitane Olympic Record II by (cobrabyte), on Flickr

The "show your red bar tape" thread inspired me to finally fix up the old Gitane I had hanging in the garage over the weekend. I had a bunch of spare parts left over from past projects I was able to put to use.

Cleaned and re-packed headset, BB, hubs and used Simple Green to clean the frame which worked great.
upgraded parts new to the bike include:
Wrights leather saddle
MKS quill pedals
Suntour Vx-GT front and rear derailleurs
SR stem
Dia-Compe brake levers, calipers, and top tube cable clips
Specialized Armadillo tires
The frame pump and h-bar bag I will "borrow" from my Lotus when I ride this bike.

New parts i had to end up buying:
brake cables & housing
new chain
Tressotar cloth bar wrap
inner tubes

1990 Fiji Ace in NOS condition

But it needed a few things for its new role as daily commuter/kid hauler
Fatter tires, better saddle (Arione), longer seatpost (Uno), better brake pads (Koolstop), fenders, lights, and a bell:

Rides great. Mid level Japanese bikes like this continue to impress me with their overall quality.

Sunday at 5 pm...

Sunday at about 6:30 pm...

Sunday at 8:30pm...

Monday afternoon...

Adding the front brake on Monday saved my life today... the coaster brake would not have kept me from getting right hooked when a truck made a right turn from the middle lane (there is no turning lane) when I was alongside in the right hand through way and proceeding through to pick my girls up after school.

I chased down the driver and reamed her out for making such an unsafe turn... she thought the middle lane was also a turning lane and was very apologetic. That would not have helped if she had run me over.

How do some people get their licenses ?

This is a bad intersection and this has happened before... last time it was a gravel truck and I make it a point to ride slowly and way out in the lane and watch the traffic on my left.

Miyata Three Twelve. This is more of a "Before and During" than "Before and After". Gone is that terrible excuse for a saddle and that awful "fly" bar tape.

Before it got too dark tonight I took it for a quick test ride. I have to level the saddle, adjust the FD, and replace the tires with the Paselas that are already ordered. Not sure how, but the brakes on this thing are outstanding.

Before

During

Here is my first try

Here is my first try at a rebuild to suit my limited commuting needs. Started life as a worn 1988 Schwinn World and is now my heavy weight cruiser for my once / twice a week commute to work and back. Tried changing to 700C wheels, but for some reason could not get the spacing right on the axles, so I stuck with the 27's and just ordered skinnier tires!

Before:

After:

I am sure I will continue to improve it!

Did more work on the bike this evening... it got a little shinier and now stops as well as it goes.

Was too dark for pictures though.

In the first picture I was thinking that the back ground wall needed a little paint touch up. Amazing job of swapping out the clap boards for brick and the cement for living green grass.

Oh, and the bike looks nice too.

1975? Fuji Ace that I picked up at a garage sale a few weeks ago. It was a pile of parts labeled $1! quickly took on the challenge. It looks a lot like the after, but now has tan cork Cinelli bar tape. It looks way better, hehe. Now if I could only keep the back tire (Pasela tourguard) from popping off the rim with absolutely NO warning. Rides like one would expect from a high end Japanese bike...AWESOME.,,,,BD

BD - You did well for a dollar... and the Japanese really know how to make a nice bicycle.

It is like cars... get a Japanese one and you know it is going to work and with other more exotic ones you know you are going to spend more time under the hood.

How do you define restoration? I had it painted because it had a lot of rust and then converted it to single speed. It has original wheels with new spokes in the rear. I guess restoration means to have it as close to the original as possible, correct?
