Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recent pics from my favorite local ride, up Route 220 to the Homestead:

The mountains here are not as large or awe-inspiring as many of the other pics I have seen here, but they are home.

It was a bit colder than we anticipated seeing it was mid June...

Especially as the weather was like this in the valley!

I've been posting these everywhere on BF. Riding in the mountains is a rare treat for me, so this was kind of a big deal to me.

It's Mt. Fuji in the background.
Let me see if I have my photos of going up Mt. Fuji, which has a road up to about 2400 meters. Just doesn't look as good from that close up.

This will also double as my show-your-cannondale photo.

Climbing some steep hill near Steamboat Springs last week on the Ride the Rockies tour. Only a little bit of mountain in the background compared to some of the other pics from the ride, but a good view of the road grade.

First weekend the passes were open. 2160m Mt. Shirane

Top of Ice House Road climb in the Sierras (El Dorado County). I rode my mtb because I didn't feel like getting 2 flat tires from the goat-head thorns I saw on this road when I first climbed it last summer.

Not my regular bike, since I'm just visiting.

These climbs were all done on my Dahon Speed D7 7-speed folding bike because I drove a rental vehicle to the mountains and it's a PITA to put a full-size road bike in a typical sedan.

I managed to squeeze in an early morning ride around Montgenevré before Stage 17 of this year's Tour de France. In this photo, I am on the Col du Montgenevré and that peak is on the southern side of the valley.

I don't think I have what it takes to do the whole touring thing, but when I see pictures like this I really can appreciate why you guys do it. Beautiful.

I guess this is near Calgary? I was up there only for a day and a night a few years ago. I'd really like to do some backpacking in Banff in the near future. Very lovely area.

We weren't cycling touring on that particular ride, but we were travelling with our bicycles. We flew to Canada, then drove to Alberta and parked the van at a particular spot, unloaded the bicycles ... and went for a ride.

This is on Hwy 11 ... the most beautiful highway I've ever cycled. Hwy 11 goes between Saskatchewan River Crossing (approx. halfway between Banff and Jasper on the Icefield Parkway) and Red Deer ... but the really beautiful part is between Saskatchewan River Crossing and about Nordegg.

(BTW - if you click my photos, you'll see more similar scenery)
