Goodbye Hooligancyclist
I don't post here often, but I thought I should under these circumstances. I had the honor of meeting forum member, Matt Wilson, who posted as hooligancyclist several times this year. He was a thoughtful young man and a strong cyclist. Matt died Friday, on his 23rd birthday, when he collapsed during a ride.
Matt was one of the youngest ever finishers of the Terrible Two double century, and completed it five times. He had an infectious smile and was one of those people who would talk to and encourage anyone, regardless of speed or ability. So sad.

When I finished the Devil Mountain Double this April he served me lasagna at midnight. I asked him if he was a volunteer and he said no, he had finished hours ago and he was just hanging out to welcome finishers and congratulate them.
He loved cycling and people that much. A special young man, gone too soon.

Daniel, there was a guy from SRCC who recently did 3 back to back Terrible Twos. (I know - crazy!) Anyway, Matt worked the late shift SAG for him making sure he was safe. He also crewed for a friend's 508 last year. You're right - in addition to being a strong cyclist, he was just a good kid.
I caught him and his friend after Morgan Territory at DMD and he really tried to keep me with them through the flat parts. Eventually as we started up Altamont, I had to let them go. But he was someone who always would slow down to chat with you during a ride even though he was way stronger and faster.

Very sad, as others have said - condolences to all who knew Matt. A good reminder to seize the day.

I had sadness in my heart when I read this last week, and now it is back again. Probably even heavier.
I feel for his parents, his friends and all who ever met this young man.

Matt sounds like someone I wish I could have met. The world is clearly better for his having been in it.
Let's honor his memory by hugging, phoning or otherwise reaching out to those we love and let them know we love them.
