Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Whats more aero

Which would you all think would be more aero... a 27mm rim with 20/24 spokes or a 24mm rim with 16/20 spokes. Or would any difference be negligible

thanks

Probably a wash. Neither would really be considered 'aero' wheels.

If your name is Contador or Schleck, you might notice the difference. Otherwise, no.

Depends. The shimano rs80s and dura-ace equivalents are actually pretty aero for box rims.

The aero advantage of wheels is quite small, really. Much more important are: position, time trial bars, helmet, skin suit, cables... once you've fixed all those, you might look into wheels.

That frontal area difference (couple mm) might be about the same difference between wearing a tighter fit shirt and a loose fit one. Probably not enough to notice unless you are riding well over 50 to 75 miles at a time.

From everything I've read about the amount of watts that these wheels save, for half the price a set of aerobars and a TT helmet will save MUCH more energy.

I assume most people purchase these wheels either for 1) smooth/quality ride 2) better durability than cheap wheels 3) looks 4) already own everything else aero and trying to eke out the last bit of performance.

Rent some time in a wind tunnel and you'll find out which is faster (in a wind tunnel)

Of course there's a difference and you may or may not notice it. The important thing is does the wheel do the intended job? Every wheel has it's pros and cons. Figure out your goal and get the wheel best suited for it. There's threads all over the place discussing it. GL

There might be an option 5) don't want to ride with aero bars and TT helmet.

I don't think you'll find any speed differences between the two wheels. But one big advantage of the 27mm rim is better handling
