Bad, bad ride - Bad, bad day
My email to Boyd Johnson after my second ride on my beautiful new carbon wheels says it all:
>>>
Boyd:
Left a message regarding wheel noise on my new 58mm clinchers. Apparently the noise I was hearing was not normal for a carbon wheel – it was my cassette coming loose. When it finally did, the chain dropped and gouged the spokes and hub (pic attached).
To top it off, I got clipped by a car on the same ride.
ARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you forget the spacer that goes on the hub first before you begin putting the rings on? If you do, the lock ring will fully tighten to the torque spec, but it won't be squeezing the rings together and they will be loose on the hub.
I know because I did it two days ago on my new Boyd 58s but luckily realized it right after I got done torquing

So, is OP is simply sharing and venting, to the wheelbuilder (and us), about his unfortunate circumstance- or placing blame?

Allow me to clarify - Absolutely NOT blaming Boyd in any way. Within 10 mins of sending the email I had a response saying they would take care of it and me. Great customer support.

Yup, Sh*t happens. Good thing there are still businesses with great customer service to help balance things out. Hope your next ride goes on without a hitch.

nope, it was a 10 speed freehub. when the cassette loosened, the chain got caught between the cassette and spokes. unfortunately it will mean that all the elbows out spokes (7 of them) will have to be replaced and the wheel will have to be retensioned. Not that big of a deal but it's a good lesson that everything should be installed properly and tightened to spec.

I'm confused. Is the take-away here that the lock-ring was not properly torqued and therefore the cassette loosened and the chain slipped off to the inside? As result the spokes will need to be replaced, which Boyd is going to do? The fault for the incident lying with whoever installed the cassette? Just curious.
At any rate, I can attest to Boyd's customer service, regardless of the situation I have no doubt you will be well taken care of.
On an unrelated note, when I got my fancy new Boyd wheels I threw them on my bike and got ready to race. In a shakedown cruise I noticed I was having some shifting trouble. I took it to a mechanic who told me I should never go back to whoever installed the cassette. Apparently the idiot had forgotten to install the spacer....
I didn't talk to myself for the next few hours, but I made it up to myself by making sure to give myself something nice to make up for having done such a poor job on the install.

In short, I didn't know enough to know that something was really wrong. A good education is always expensive.

Forgetting the spacer is easy, 11 speed compatible hubs are new technology. I forgot to put the spacer on a wheel a couple weeks ago. (I noticed before I rode it luckily.)
