Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

budget lightweight hubs?

I've been researching hubs for a lightweight wheel build and saw that some popular custom jobs included ~300g hubs that were quite light on the wallet as well. Does anyone have any long-term experience with these they are willing to share?

These hubs include sets like:

https://cgi.ebay.com/6-pawl-CNC-Road-...item35adb0d4dd

https://cgi.ebay.com/Novatec-A291SB-F...item415305cfd3

And some formula branded hubs this forum had a group buy on long ago?

Tell me what you guys think. Are these worth it for wheels that may occasionally see some rain while on LA roads? I'm also open to suggestions for other 24/28h hubs you guys like.

Before buying any cartridge hubs, it'd be a good idea to know that a local LBS can service them. A few years ago I bought a set of wheels with SpeedCific hubs. I think that they are rebranded Formulas. At that time the wheelbuilder, Mike Garcia of Odds and Endos, recommended annual service. The OP used them in a road race during a heavy rain, which caused the front hub to need new bearings. I found one LBS who would try to service the hub. The rear hub was more complicated. Noone seemed to know anything about how to service them. The situation may have changed, but I'd want to know who would service my hubs.

BTW the OP said that when he raced the hubs, he didn't know that putting petroleum jelly on the sides would have blocked the water from getting into the hub. I'd still want to know who will service my hubs.

The Novatech hubs are great for the money. They're easy to service, too.

My four year old Mike Garcia wheels have what appear to be Novatech hubs although they are branded Speedcific.

The front's now on my rain/winter bike. It's been totally reliable with zero maintenance and a lot of abuse. The rear hasn't gotten as much use but the hub has been reliable for the riding it's gotten.

I'd get more Novatech hubs for budget wheels.

Alchemy Hubs are probably a little more than you're looking to spend, but they're quite good and not astronomically priced. C-4 has also been turning out great product recently that's definitely not bank breaking.
