Only when racing. Ordinary cycling is safe enough, and bicycle helmets ineffectual enough, to make wearing them an irrelevance. Lots of good information here.

Nobody races cars with seatbelts. Gotta roll with a harness. Airbags are typically removed for any serious racing also. A safe auto driver would utilize helmets, harness, roll cage, fire suppression, etc. On their drive in to work or Costco.

While my friends and I were biking yesterday we passed up this guy on a MTB wearing a full dirtbike helmet with street clothes. It was like +75F. That guy must've been baking under there.

I personally wear a helmet on any ride longer than a mile, generally rolling around town on sidewalks. But when I ride to my girlfriends house (aprox. 16 miles) I always wear a helmet, even with a fairly wide shoulder.

To wear a helmet or not, it's clearly up to you. Plenty of information for and against them and it's always ends in a meaningless discussion with possibly irked feelings. I just bought one a few minutes ago, a Giro Rift.

moving target
when i race. other than that. tuck and roll seems to work.
last time i crashed violently my glasses did most of the damage as they exited my face.
and the other time was a friction burn on my hand.

When I am riding in a cycling event that requires a helmet, I wear one. Otherwise, no. Since I used to BMX for years, I have this idea that I "know how to fall"...which is probably bullsh*t logic

re: Bern breathability
While the Brentwood does have more/larger vents than some of their less expensive offerings, it still gets pretty hot under there. For me though, it's not that much worse than traditional cycling helmets. Most of the time I wear a cap underneath anyway, and with the way the Bern fits I don't really need to. You have to consider that they're selling helmets to "lifestyle" riders, as well as people doing tricks. These aren't the kinds of people who tend to ride at 20mph+, where a racing style helmet would be more effective at directing wind.

I wear a helmet when ever I am going in an area that I am unsure is or simply isn't cyclist aware/friendly.

i have a Bern Macon helmet i use for skating and it has a built in visor which sucks when you need to go low on the drops. so i'm considering getting a road helmet asap. but yeah, i've been wearing helmets since in almost every activity i go into, saved my head more than once. i wear no hair too so that should help with the cooling.

I wear my helmet when I'm riding alone (harder and longer distance rides). When I ride with the wife (more laid back rides) I wear a cycling cap.

If I'm riding around my neighborhood (not very big; no streets long enough for OMGCrazySpeed), just a cycling cap to wick sweat.
If I'm out on the highways or downtown, I always wear a helmet.

Helmets for people who care about their brains and not becoming living slabs of flesh.
i dont wear a helmet and when i rode sportbikes, it was a do i wear a helmet day question every time i woke up.

Even if a helmet only gives me a small increase in chance of survival of some types of head related trauma, I'm wearing one. Only takes one bump to not have the ability to regret not having worn a helmet.

Sort of related...a friend of mine had an end-over-end accident on his motorcycle at a speed of less than 35mph (no helmet; his bike was a 750cc cruiser)...he was in a medically-induced coma for two weeks (so they could shunt the blood off his brain), and required months and months of physical/mental rehab afterwards. Luckily, he's back to 100% today (accident was in 2009) with only minimal scarring on his face and head, but more than anything his accident put into perspective the cost to one's family during a time like that. His wife and kids pretty much lived at the hospital in shifts, they had to fight to extend his temporary disability pay (only roughly 60% of his regular income) and the financial burden brought on by the medical costs is still hounding them to this day. If he'd have worn a helmet, it wouldn't necessarily have guaranteed his safety, but the chances of avoiding quite as catastrophic an injury would have been higher as opposed to not wearing one.
In short, I agree...even raising the chance of avoiding such a high cost by one percent would be worth it to me. And by that token, I really should have a dose of my own medicine.

It only took a Marine telling me I was being stupid to get me to be an ALWAYS, helment wearer.
