Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They should be M5x12mm long.

Yes, all the bottle mounts I've encountered use 5mm x 0.8mm thread. If you can't source metric hardware, Unified and American Screw Thread size 10-32 is compatible.

It's very close, but #10-32 is a little undersized compared to M5 x 0.8mm so it will be a little sloppy. Usually fine for steel into steel, but if you're threading a steel #10-32 into an M5 x 0.8mm aluminum boss, be careful not to overtighten.

Of course that makes M5 x 0.8mm oversize for #10-32 thread, and some American-made bikes appear to have used #10-32 riv-nuts. M5 x 0.8mm are hard to screw in without damage to something. I have seen people spin their riv-nuts or even break the screws because of this. So if you are trying to thread in an M5 x 0.8mm and it won't go, stop trying. Get a #10-32 and see how that goes. If that doesn't go, then the boss probably needs to be tapped.

(Almost not worth mentioning because of rarity, but some vintage British bikes used 2BA screws.)
