Removing and installing a crown race without the proper tools is almost impossible. The race is a part of the headset and needs to be pressed into the fork for the headset bearings to roll on. Each headset uses a unique race and close enough doesn't work here.

The race remover and installer do one job each and do it well.

Chopping the steerer is the easy part.

Then theres spillover tools and hardware: torque wrench for crabon, files, housing ties, maybe brake adjustment.

I'm aware that it's an old thread, but if anyone's thinking of doing this, ignore the recommendation for the Surly Ogre fork earlier in the thread, not because the commenters were mistaken or wrong, but because they are discussing an older version of the Ogre fork that's no longer made.

The Surly Ogre's geometry was changed from suspension corrected to non-suspension corrected, so the comments here relate to the old style of suspension corrected Ogre fork. If you came here via Google after late 2020 for info on replacing a Suntour 63 mm travel fork, the Ogre fork is no longer appropriate.

For those wanting to replace Suntour NCX or NEX 63mm travel forks on the Giant Roam 1, 2 & 3 models with a Surly touring fork, use the 29+ Surly ECR fork (there is another ECR fork for 27.5+, but it is shorter by 20mm).

The Suntour NCX fork has an axle-to-crown of 467 mm, while the ECR 29+ fork has an axle-to-crown of 468 mm, so they're virtually identical.

Edit: The ECR is now discontinued, so maybe the forks will be as well? Maybe check out the Kinesis Forks on Bike24? They have a 470 trekking fork that is perfect for replacing Suntour NCX or NEX 63mm travel forks, as it has a basically identical axle to crown measurement.
