Schwinn Hurricane Appraisal

Hi All,

I am hoping I can get an estimate on how much a late 70s Schwinn Hurricane goes for. I've had it for over 15yrs and would like to see it to a new home.

There is one currently on Ebay going for $800, but am not sure where else to look for pricing estimates. Could any one give me an idea?

I'd like to post pics but being a new member, I am unable to.

Regards

"There is one currently on Ebay going for $800," Its not going for $800, that's just an asking price. Big difference. Until it has sold, then what it goes for is unknown. Sellers on eBay can and often do ask silly high prices.

Sure enough, if you look at actual sold items on eBay, none brought anything close to $800.

Start with sold items on eBay. Compare your bike to the ones that sold as far as condition and completeness. And then realize to get eBay type prices, you have to be willing and able to pack and ship at a reasonable price. Then you have 13 to 15% in fees.

Niche bikes like this tend to bring a lot more money on eBay than sold locally. Local sales depend on where you live, but often will be a small fraction of the eBay sold prices. I see sellers on my local C/L reference eBay selling prices. They always focus on ASKING prices, not sold prices. They are somewhat delusional. I have seen bikes reposted hundreds of times over several years where the seller is trying to get an unrealistic price.

And a technicality, but here you get opinions, not appraisals. A professional appraiser can come up with a value at a cost. "Free" appraisals are just opinions, which I have one of course.

Nice looking bike.

And, it appears to be in great condition, just needing a little cleaning and detailing.

I find it interesting the inequality in prices between different models. The 5-speed vintage (not new release) Krate bikes can go for pretty silly amounts.

But, alas, yours doesn't seem to be quite as hot.

Unfortunately, E-Bay hides some of the selling prices, but you could well be around $500 once cleaned up.

Really nicely cleaned up up and presented on ebay or in a major market I would say $400. As presented in most markets I think your looking at $250-300 for a local sale and it taking awhile to sell. Nice bike but these don't hold a lot of interest for classic muscle bike or BMX bike fans who want slightly older and nicer muscle bikes or early true BMX bikes. The lesser kinda in between bikes from late 70's just don't do nearly as well.

Thank you all for help!

When I saw the ebay links, in my head, I said there is no way it will sell for $800. Maybe I will hold onto it for a little while longer. Clean it up and make it a fun little project down the road!

Thanks again,

Bryan
