Had a nice ride doing the Solvang Century yesterday. We were very fortunate to get a nice weather window. Clouds and sun, generally light wind. Temps were cool, starting in upper 30s and maxing out low 50s probably. My first time for this one. It was a good year to do it, with all the rain the hills were lush green. Glad I took the Niner with the big tires, quite a bit of rough road.

I'll be at solvang doing the double I haven't trained for. Should be fun if weather/wind holds

ouch. Don’t do that. You’ll end up like me only pretending to ride.

Nah, he'll be fine. The Belgian Waffle ride is way worse and THAT thing is 140 miles... actually, it's 136 miles and 12,000 feet of climbing and enough dirt that ol' JSigone is putting a cross crank on that machine.

I might try the Wafer with my gravel bike some year. I might need to drop down to a 46/30 crankset. I have a compact with 11-34 on the back, not sure 1:1 is low enough. There are a few spots in Whiting Ranch that I have to walk up.

Non omnino gravis
It's becoming increasingly clear that other people ride "gravel" for very different reasons than I do. If it can't be done with 1:1, it doesn't need to be done at all. Period.
I spent 2+ hours of marvelous leisure this morning, tooling around in the Santa Ana River basin, because the wind is constant +12mph from the WNW and I really don't feel like fighting it.
We've got our very own inland sea all of a sudden.

I tend to agree, but the stuff out my back yard has some nasty bits. Nothing like that nice river basin you're riding around. Nice pics!

If I had a gravel bike, which I do not, but would dearly love to have, I think I would enjoy riding not on asphalt and not near cars. Agree about the 1:1 and maybe not even that low.

It’s nice during the week, I can ride up the Serrano Creek trail into other trails in and around Whiting Ranch. So I can stay off the roads during weekday traffic and still get a good ride. As long as the mountain lions don’t get me!

If I remember right after the BWR a few years ago, good ol' @jsigone didn't touch his bikes for quite a while.

If you HAVE to walk anything, its because your in traffic and everyone is walking or you have leg cramps like no other. I've done it 2 yrs on my Felt roadie w 53/39 front and 28t rear. And 2 yrs on my CX bike with 50/36 and same rear 28t. This yr I plan to run 44/34 and 28t rear, less cross chaining.
