I'm not just talking about taking it super-seriously, though that's part of it. There's also the element of self-medicating through endurance sport, specifically with the "runner's high" that you also get in cycling and swimming. These are also typically solo events, unlike crew.
I think the difference between running (and these others) is that there are almost zero mentally-healthy runners; if you're happy you're simply not going to go do that when you could go play a game with your friends. There are certainly mentally-healthy beanbag-slanted-board players.

So, I had to have a dye test for pictures of my retinas and the nurse told me that the injection would turn my pee fluorescent yellow and not to be alarmed. After the test, I stopped off at the rest room and they had one of these ADA low urinals which I can’t seem to get close enough to. After completing my task, the urinal, surrounding walls and floor looked like a scene out of CSI where they spray Luminal around and then hit the black lights.

physical activity is important to me. Balancing it so that it doesn’t become excessive is the part I have to work on. If I was single I would be cycling all day long and that’s not healthy either. I tend to be on the extreme side, either I do it all or do nothing, but recognizing that I’m able to stay ahead of it.

So speaking of things in excess, it has become painfully clear that I need to start coming down hard on my diet. I had a long chat with the wife about it and was between trying to "ignore" diet in favor of finding a rigorous training plan to build power and assume that weight will drop as a result of work and not totally stuffing myself or just counting calories like a schmuck. I think focusing on diet and losing weight while allowing the power to build "naturally" with harder effort rides would probably have a better return on the W/kg metric. I have another event on March 21st that I want to show up and do well on. I'm assuming it's going to be a 100K, so I need to start doing longer endurance rides on the weekends.
Last year, I started tracking my weight and calorie counting in late Jan (I think). I started out at 212. I aimed for a 750 cal deficit per day. On days when I did an hour on the trainer or walking, no problem, even including a beer a treat at the end of the day. I was under 200 by late March.

Sitting down at one of my favorite hole in the wall Mexican places for a much needed recovery meal.
I was able to get in a metric this morning, but there was a ***** of a cross wind - one of those deals where you're really looking forward to turning around, on that out and back, but turning around is nothing but a disappointment when it finally happens.
Oh well, better than the couch and I get to eat pork in chile verde.

My poor kitty had the urinary tract obstruction badly enough that he needed the surgery. He was fine after that. Fingers crossed yours is ok after the meds.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
Honestly, I like calorie counting - it's effective and if you're moderately active, you don't have to be an Ascetic - I think that it gives you more leeway, rather than less.

I have a couple of small tweaks I am going to make and just go from there. I know what calories in and out look like for me because I have done the counting thing enough, so I'm not doing it totally blind. Just trying to cut some indulgences and concentrate on cooking more and eating real food.

Speaking of health, my entire household has been sick or getting sick for something like a week now. I'm last on the list and I'm trying my hardest to dodge it, but I think I can feel it coming on. Could just be me psyching myself out. I already gave coworkers the heads up that I might be a carrier and disappear in a day or two. Going to try and get in some good zwifting tonight before I fall apart.

The problem with calorie counting for me is that it actually encourages me to eat out more. I can just select an item from the database and move on with my life. I would occasionally build recipes and put out the servings, etc. but it was such a pain. When it becomes a hassle, I tend to take the easy way out which ends up being less healthy.

How have you figured out your daily caloric burn accurately enough to make calorie counting effective? Do you just eat at a big enough estimated deficit to make being a few hundred calories off not a huge deal?

My new-to-me MTB frame was scheduled to be delivered today. I've been checking the tracking and now it got pushed out to tomorrow.
Annoying.

And then special food the rest of his life. I've been paying US$30 for a 3.5 kilogram bag for the past couple years.

I was just thinking that calorie counting homemade foods sounds like a gigantic PITA.
