Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They (and state health depts) have a very active surveillance program. But it's based on lab testing. Not everyone with the flu gets tested, actually I don't even test if I am pretty sure.

2. Outpatient Illness Surveillance

Information on outpatient visits to health care providers for influenza-like illness is collected through the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet). ILINet consists of outpatient healthcare providers in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands reporting approximately 60 million patient visits during the 2018-19 season. Each week, approximately 2,600 outpatient healthcare providers around the country report data to CDC on the total number of patients seen for any reason and the number of those patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) by age group (0-4 years, 5-24 years, 25-49 years, 50-64 years, and ≥65 years). For this system, ILI is defined as fever (temperature of 100°F [37.8°C] or greater) and a cough and/or a sore throat without a known cause other than influenza. Sites with electronic health records use an equivalent definition as determined by public health authorities.

Stuff happens. I had recently returned to music in the past couple of years and that has gotten a lot of my time. I've also had no less than 4 major family tragedies/struggles in the past 5 years that caused me to step away from time to time.

Someone mentioned Heathpack earlier. I was not around when she had her accident that was also mentioned. I know I've seen her pop up on Strava recently so she is still riding and doing focused workouts.

Speaking of bikes... Wait, were we not talking about bikes?

Anyway, I've got more fake miles on the agenda for tonight. Of course after dinner making and herding kids. Last year I had just gotten a smart trainer and Zwift and was full of optimism that turned into burnout pretty quickly. This time I've ramped up to more time on the bike and am being careful to use Zwift for when I can't get out while also being sure to get at least one outdoor ride in a week. Hopefully two outdoor rides. I'm also making sure to find new roads/routes and really mix up the outdoor rides instead of riding the same 1 or 2 loops. I was really bad about that before.

A government surveillance program--some P&R material there.

I thought maybe the doctors had to report all the flus they saw.

datlas , if DougRNS gets the flu, will you report it even if he isn't your patient?

The flu tracker hasn't been updated in almost two weeks.

How long can an area be under red flu alert? Tennessee has been red since November 30.

To prove my point, I'd like to brag that I rode 27+ miles this morning ahead of a forecast three days of weather-geddon. My weather app shows mid-ride wind speeds of 22 mph gusting to 37 mph.

My stupid Garmin 1030 quit ~23 miles into the ride but because I'm a redundancy person, I finished recording for Strava on my Apple watch.

I think that's true for the know-it-alls, narcissists, bombasts, and forum alpha dogs, not the small-talking yappers such as myself. I think we want attention, but not in a self-important way.

Reminds me of a little ankle-biter dog.

I never thought of it that way before but now that the image is in my head...

Huh, I don't know exactly how many TN counties I've ridden in. Probably 14 or so (out of 95).

Tennessee counties were set up so (back in the day) a person could make a trip to the county seat in under a day.

You must have some fast horses in PA.
